T h e C heltenham w eek, w h ich h a d open ed in au spiciously, from a G loucestershire p oin t o f view , w ith a defeat at the hands o f Som ersetshire, cam e to an equally u n satisfactory ending on F riday. F or th e secon d fixture, the A ustralian team furnished the opp osition , and though they w ere dism issed fo r a lesser to ta l than m ight have been expected, th e cou n ty never had anything o f a chance. T h e A ustralians, w ho left ou t L yons, G regory and Jarvis, fou n d the G loucestershire bow ling w eakened b y the absence o f M urch, w ho had strained his leg. W ith M urch aw ay, G lou ces tershire did w ell to have an outing on ly o f three hours. F o r this they w ere m ainly in debted to the effective bow lin g o f th e young C lifton ian, T ow n send. F ive o f the A ustralians got over tw enty runs, bu t th e best as w ell as th e highest score w as that o f T rum ble. G oin g in fou rth w icket dow n at 104, h e w as eighth ou t a t 183, and his 47, w hich on ly occu p ied an h our and a quarter,w as absolutely free from fault. T ow n sen d’s slow bow lin g w as very effective, as already stated. H is five w ickets cost fou rteen runs a piece. O f th e earlier batsm en of G loucestershire, W .G . began well, m aking 26 of the first 34 runs. H a lf th e side w ere ou t fo r 37,and it w as on ly a useful stand at the end of th e day by E . M . G ra ce and R ice, w h o added 39, that gave som ething like a fair appearance to the score. On F riday m orning E .M . w h o w as n ot out 20, received very little assistance, and w hen he w as out, after adding 17 ou t of 33, th e innings w as over fo r a total o f 109. T h e explanation of G loucestershire’s sm all score w ill be fou n d partly in th e excellent bow ling of G . G iffen. H is seven w ickets co s t less than six runs a piece. F ollow in g on in a m inority o f 98 G loucestershire began badly, losing W .G . and F erris fo r only tw elve runs. A useful stand by R ice and P ainter, how ever, gave the gam e a better appearance fo r th e cou n ty, and chiefly through th e latter’s brilliant hitting, th e part nership added 71 m n s. R ice stayed in som e tim e, b u t o f the rest n o one, except W . G ., jun., did anything, and the in nings closed fo r 131, the last seven w ickets having only added 48. L e ft w ith 34 to w in, th e A ustralians lost B ruce from the first ball, and B annerm an at six. G . G iffen and T rott, how ever, quickly k n ocked off the runs still w anted, leaving th e v ictory w ith th e A ustralians b y eight w ickets. A u str a l ia n s . F irst Innings.
