Cricket 1893
AUG. 24, 1898 ORIOKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 367 SO M E R S E T S H IR E v. NO TTS. Som ersetshire, w ho, as w ill be rem em bered, were the first last year to low er the colou rs o f the hitherto in vincible eleven of N otts, had the satis faction o f »eating tbem again at Taunton on Tuesday. In J. A. D ix on 's absence C. W . W right captain ed N otts, w ho were also w ithout S hacklock and Sherw in. On the other h m d H. T. H ew ett, w ho had stood out o f the Surrey m atch last w eek, w as a*le again to take charge of the Som er setshire eleven, w ith, as w ill b e seen, the best results. H eavy rain had fallen early on M onday in T aunton, and N otts, as it proved, suffered rather than profited by the ch oice of inning*. T h e w icket at th e ou tset w as soft, and •yler, W ood s, and B edley were able to utilise it to such an extent that in a few m inutes over tw o h ours N otts w ere dism issed for the sm all total o f a hundred. T hanks to Shrew sbury, Jones, and F low ers, the score w as 86 w ith on y h alf the side out, bu t the tail failed utterly, and the l»st four batsm en, as the score w ill show , did n ot get a run betw een them . G unn failed to score, and Shrew sbury, though he w as in fo r an hour and ten m inutes, wa«i hardly in his best form . By the time N otts took the field the w icket had im proved considerably, and the S om ersetshire batsm en were seen to the best advantage. W ith L . P alairet H ew ett p u t on 52 for the first w icket, and later on H edley scored freely, m aking 48 ou t o f G9in a little over half an hour. Still, tbe best exhibition was that o f the captain, and at the end of the day, when the telegraph show ed 200 w ith on ly four batsm en out, he w as still in w ith 82 to h is credit. On T ues day m orning H ew ett continued to punish the N otts’ bow ling, and in a little over an hour 85 were %added at a co s t o f tw o m ore batsr^en T he Som er- 'setshire ca pta in w as sixth ou t w ith tbe total at 257. H e had been b attin g three hours and a quarter, and his 120—a ch aracter istic display o f free and punisning crick et—only contain ed on e chance, w hen he had got 112. R ain caused a lon g interruption, and th~n the innings cam e to a rapid close, the last fou r w ickets falling in h a lf an hour for 25 runs. W ith 2'1 to save an innings defeat N otts had a very difficult task before them w ith a w icket favouring the bow lers m aterially. W ith G unn and S hrew sbury again ou t for sm all scores, too, their case w as h o p e le ss, and as the side w ere dism issed in an hour and fifty m in u tes for 112 S om ersetshire had an easy w in by an innings and 99 runs. T yler’s bow ling was one o f the best features of their cricket. In the m atch he took nine w ickets at a cost o f just over eight run s a piec e. N o t ts .
