S U R R E Y T h e Surrey eleven brought a disappointing season to a close, so far at least as first-class crick et is concerned,on the C lifton College G round yesterday w ith a defeat at the hands o f G lou ces tershire. L ock w ood , w h o had strained the ca lf of his right leg at T au n ton last w eek, w as unable to help Surrey, but, on the oth er hand, G lou cester shire w as equally unfortunate in losing the services o f W . G. also ow ing to a strain. T hough heavy rain had fallen in th e early m orn in g of M onday, E. M. G race, having w on the toss, thought it advisable to go in first. ‘ As it was, the ground w as never in favour o f rungetting, and an innings w as com p leted by each side on M onday, w ith an advantage o f tw enty-six runs to Surrey on a total of 131. T h e h ighest individual score w as A b el’s 25, and M urch, w ho w ent in tenth, had the distinction o f the best con trib u tion for G loucestershire. C uriously enough, R ichardson, Surrey’ s fast bow ler, and C. L . T ow nsend each took six w ickets fo r th eir respective sides, and fo r the sam e num ber o f runs, 56. The young G loucestershire am a teur pu zzled the Surrey batsm en generally, and his perform ance, follow ing on others o f alm ost equal m erit, fully confirm s the belief that h e has a prom ising future before him , G loucestershire m ade a very bad start in their second innings on T u esday, losing R ice and Captain Luard for only eleven runs. A m istake in n ot running Painter out, lio w e v e r, w as frau gh t w ith serious con se quences for Surrey, and a life to E . M . G race also stood G loucestershire in good stead. A t all events, P ainter k n ock ed up 43 in fifty m inutes, and E M., w ho stayed an hour and a-half with Ferris, p u t on 31 before he w as out. F erris, w hose ca refu l cricket w as of the greatest value, was batting tw o hours and a half, and P age’s vigorous hitting at the finish w as in direct contrast. He was on ly in an hour and tw enty m inutes, and his 53— the highest score of tbe m a tch — did m u ch to decide th e result. L e ft w ith 191 to w in. Surrey lost fou r of their best batsm en in the last hour and a h a lf on T uesday for 83, o f w hich Shucer con tribu ted 44 in his b est style. Y esterday Surrey ha d 108 to w in w ith six w ickets to fall, and as the rem aining batsm en on ly added 74, G loucestershire w ere left w ith a h igh ly cred ita' le v icto ry b y 33 runs. T h is v ictory o f G loucestershire, it is w orthy o f rem ark, is th sir first over Surrey sin ce 1885. G lo u c e s t e r sh ir e . F irst Innings. S econd Innings.
