Cricket 1893
858 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. AUG. 24 1898 “ No, I have oopied nobody, and don’t intend to now. Not because I think so highly of my own bowling, but because if I were to change my style now I might lose the little skill I have, I don’t easily tire, but then I’m young and strong, and besides we have so many good bowlers, and our captains don’t believe in working any of us to death. Some persons say I slow down a bit after bowling for half-an-honr ; perhaps I do, tTut I am not aware of it. The ball comes with my hand, that is, I try to make it do so. Sometimes I put in a plain ball, and then I notice it has generally a leg break, though I know nothing about it. I always bowl fast, never put in a slow one, taking care not to bowl beyond my strength. The fact is, any slows I might send down would be sure to be knocked all over the place.” “ I can’t remember much abont my doings either with bat or ball. I know I haven’t yet earned the talent money, but I think I should at Sheffield, against Sussex this year, when David and I put on 50 for the last wicket after nine of our chaps had got out for 61. I was not out 83. And I might have done it to-day against Gloucestershire if David had stopped a bit longer, and had let me try and get 15 more. Last year I did perhaps my best bowling of any match—it was against Derby shire at Leeds, when I took five wickets before they got a run off me, though against Sussex I bowled six wickets for 16 runs. When Mr. Jackson and Mr- Smith joined the team I was left out, and so I didn’t play at Taunton when Somersetshire got close on 600 runs, and their first wicket didn’t fall ‘ while ’ the score was 346. I felt glad afterwards 1 was not there. “ This year has been my best in batting and bowling, and I am delighted that our county is right up at the top. Perhaps my best work was up at Lord’s, when I took twelve wickets —six in each innings—for 48 runs ; but I was even prouder of what I did against Surrey, for they have such a lot of fine hitters ; I got eight of them out for 55 runs, and four Notts men for 11 runs, when we got the whole side out for 38 down at Trent Bridge. But I want to do better still. Shouldn’t I like to turn out a second Tom Emmett 1” And then I set Hirst free to join his fail friends. He may realise his o^n ambitious dream. I, for one, hope he will, for his own sake and the sake of the “ County of Bowlers.” Anyhow, up to this seoond day of August, his bowling so far this year has been fatal to 69 batsmen, at the small cost of 14.7 runs each. W ith age, strength, and sturdy self-control on his side, Hirst may before long prove to be worthy of a place on the list of great York shire bowlers. K.S.H. F irst Innings. E. G .
