K E N T v. N O T T S . A fter having all the w orst o f the first part of their m a tch w ith N otts, the secon d fixture o f the C anterbury W eek, K ent played u p so w ell as to have little or n on e th e w orst o f the draw on Saturday afternoon. A s J. A. D ixon w as unable to go on from the O val to C anterbury, the ca p ta in cy o f the N otts E leven w as undertaken by C. W . W right. In addition, Flow ers, w ho had gone on to C anterbury, w as too unw ell to play, and his place had ultim ately to be filled by T. A ttew ell. On th e other hand, K ent w ere w ithou W alter H earne, w hose bow ling w ould have been of great advantage. K ent secured choice o f innings, and con sid erin g that the w icket helped the bow lers ju st at first, did on the w hole fairly web to rem ain in till five o ’clock on T hursday a fter noon. M ason and A lec H earne pu t on 8t fo r the first w icket, R ashleigh a n d G eorge H earne 61 for the fourth, and th ese three batsm en were the ch ief con trib u tors to th e aggregate o f 202. N otts had forty-five m inutes fo r b attin g on M onday night, and tois w as sufficient to get rid o f Jones and B arnes for 40 runs. F riday was occu p ied with the ccntinuation o f the N otts innings, w hich w as still in com plete at th e close o f the day. The ch ief credit o f the lon g score jested w ith Shrew s bury and G unn. D aft helped Shrew sbury to put on 83 in the early p a rt o f the day, but the m ost interesting crick et w as daring th e partnership of Shrew sbury and G unn fo r the fourth w icket. B oth batsm en played in characteristic style, and the only fa u lt during their stay o f tw o hours w as a ch a n ce by Shrew sbury w hen he had m ade 83. The day’s crick et extended over six hours, and in this tim e 272 runs were added at a cost o f six m ore w ickets. H eavy rain fall during the early m orning o f Saturday had affected the w icket prejudicially for the last stpge of the m atch, and the b a'l got up very aw kw ardly during the day. G unn w as run ou t at 329, and w hen Sherw in w as caught the innings w as over for 336. G unn was batting four h ours and a h a lf for his 90, and if h is display w as tedious it was w ithout a fault. G oing in ju st a fter h a lf paBt tw elve o ’clock on Saturday in a m inority o f 134,K ent,in spite o f a very good innings by the W inchester captain , J. R . M ason, lost half their w ickets fo r 9U. Stew art, how ever, lent Ilaehleieh useful assistance, and their stand realised 50 runs. Stew art after helpin g to add E8 w as caught, and w ith M archant out at 170, there seem ed still a chance th a t N otts w ould win. W alter W rig h t’s defensive cricket w as how ever invaluable, and as he stayed w ith Rashleigh for tw o hours and a quarter their tt*nd saved the gam e. W ith the total 258 fo r eight w ickets the K ent captain declared. R ashleigh was n o to u t w ith 101 to his credit. H e had been batting for tw o hours and fifty m inute3, and considering how m u ch the ball bum ped at tim es it w as a rem ark able perform ance. A s N otts did not go in till ju st before 5 30, there was n o chance of a definite finish, and w ith J on es’ dism issal fo r on e the stum ps were draw n. S hacklock w as n ot w ell enough to bow l in the sacond innings o f K ent, and w ith F low ers away, the N otts bow ling w as of course greatly w eakened. Still, K ent deserve all the credit o f a capital up-hiil gam e. K e n t . F irst Innings A. H earne, b M ee ... ... ' M r. J. R . M ason, c Sher w in, b Mee .................... 49 G. G .
