828 ORICKETs A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. ATJG. 10, 1893 L A N C A S H IR E v. G L O U C E S T E R S H IR E . T he ill-luck w h ich had atten ded the G loucester shire E leven in their previous m atch es at H ud dersfield and N ottingham w as as UDm istakeably in evid en ce on the occa sio n o f the third and last m a tch o f their N orthern tour at the en d o f last week at M anchester. H eavy rain h a d prevented a com m encem ent on T h u rsday, and on F riday the gam e w as subjected to fo u r in terruptions, w hich reduced the p eriod o f a ctu a l play to three hours and three-quarters. U n der the circu m stan ces L ancashire gained a b ig advantage in w inning the toss, and the w icket, though slow , w as so easy that runs ca m e very fast. W ith a w et ball, G lou ces tershire w ere placed fo r th e m ost part at a great disadvantage, so m uch so that by th e en d of the day L ancashire h a d scored 269 w ith on ly six batsm en out. B y far the b est feature o f th e cricket w as th e fine h itting of Sugg. G oin g in first w icket dow n a t 37, h e w as sixth ou t at 261. W h en he h a d m ade 86 he ought to have been cau gh t in the lon g-field, but this w as th e on ly real m istake to m ar a brilliant display o f free crick tt, lasting over tw o h ou rs and three quarters. On Saturday m orn in g, w ith the w ick et still easy, 47 m ore w ere added fo r th e loss of T in sley and Baker, and th en H orn by th ou gh t it expedient to close h is innings. G oin g in again st a tota l o f 308, G louces tershire m ade a fairly good start, thanks to W . G. and F erris, and at lu nch tim e th e total w as 72 fo r the loss o f on ly fo u r batsm en. S ofa r there seem ed little ch a n ce o f a definite result, but a fter the interval th e sun cam e out w ith great pow er, and the w ick et b eca m e so tricky that the G lou cester shire b atsm en w ere qu ite ou t o f it. As it w as. B riggs w as able to carry everything before h im ,and In less than three hours the m a tch w as over, sixteen G loucestershire w ickets falling fo r an aggregate of 119 runs. L ancashire had thus an easy w in b y an in nings and 126 rune. T h at B riggs’ how ling w as the ch ie f fa ctor in their su ccess can be ju dged from his figure*. He took thirteen G loucestershire w ickets at a cost o f under six runs apiece. L a n c a sh ir e . Mr. A. N. H ornby, B oard , b M urch ... 19 A .
