Cricket 1893
AUG. 10,1893 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME; 827 L A N C A S H IR E v. YO RK SH IRE . L a st year the L ancashire eleven w ere in stru m ental, b y their defeat o f N otts at the end o f the season, in giving the prem iership to Surrey. T his sum m er, too, it has fallen to L ancashire’s luck to ch eck the victoiiou% m arch of the Y orkshire eleveD, and to m ake the question o f the prem ier ship once m ore an open m atter. T he prom inent position s o f tbe tw o coun ties, coupled w ith the fa ct that one o f the tw o defeats o f the Y ork shire eleven th is year h a d been at th e hands of L ancashire, w ere alone sufficient to in vest the m a tch w ith abnorm al in terest. B esides thip, Bank H oliday gives an additional opportunity fo r a big crow d, and the excitem en t taken in the m a tch was s’-iow n byth e attendance, w h ich n u m tered 22,554, the largest on record on th e M anchester ground. O w ing to the heavy rainfall at the end o f last w eek it w as certain from th e first that the ground w ould be all in favour o f th e bowlers, and so it proved. T h e Lancashire captain w as again fortu nate enough to w in the toss, and this it w as though!; w ould be a great advantage. A s it was, theYorkshire bow lers were fortunate in getting rid o f the batsm en w ho could force the gam e cheaply, and though A lbert W ard was in an hour and fifty m in u tes fo r his 19, the inningp, w hioh had lasted tw o hours and a quarter, only realised a total o f 61. B ake- m ade the highest score (21). Crosfield, w ho w as splendidly throw n ou t by Sellers, and he alone played a hitting gam e. The bow ling w as shared by Peel, Hirst, and Sm ith, and th e first-nam ed had the best figures, taking four batsm en at a co st o f 15 runs. L an ca sh ire’s innings, w hich had been interrupted for nearly an hour by rain, and the Yorkshirem en in th eir turn found Briggs and M old so difficult 02 the treacherous w icket that in less than tw o hours the e ’even were ou t for jp , or six less than L anca shire’s total. B row n was again setn to great ad vantage, and his 17 waa the highest score on the aid^s. B riggs a n l M old bow led unchanged, and the form er’ s six w ickets on ly co s t 35 runs. L anca shire, w ho had m ade 7 in th e last fifteen m inutes on M onday, fou n d th e w ick et quite as difficult on T uesday m orning, and though M cL aren and W ard b rou gh t the score t >18 before they were parted, the last nine w ickets w ere.all d ow r for an addition of only 32 or a total of CO. P eel and W ainw right this tim e bow led w ith great effect, and w hile the latter took fou r for 18, P eel got six batsm en fo r 24, m aking ten w ickets in the m atf'h at an average o f under fou r runs apiece. T h ou gh Y ork shire only w an ted at th e finish 57 to win, this as thejw icket was, w as a very far from easy task. Still, at the outset ic looked as if the runs w ould be got easily. Jackson and Sellers, indeed, m adet-uch a g ood sta rt that 21 were g ot before the form er w as run out in a rather unsatisf iCtory way. He left his ground thinking he had been given out, and had his w icket throw n dow n. F orty w as up fo r four w ickets, and it peem ed again as if Yorkshire would w in easily. Sm ith, how ever, w as given out caught, a decision w h ich w as n ot apparently satisfactory, and this w as the prelude to a series o f disasters. The rem aining batsm en fe ll rapidly before the bow ling o f Briggs and M old, and as the laBt four w ickets only added nine, L ancashire were left w ith a sensational victory by five runs. T here was great excitem ent at the result. B riggs’ bow ling had very m u ch to do w ith L ancashire’s success. In all, he took eleven w ickets for sixty runs. A s a p r o o f o f the difficult nature^of the w icket, it need on ly b e stated that the fou r com p leted innings on ly produced an aggregate of 223, o r an av<rage o f five and a h a lf runs per w icket. N otw ithstand ing th e low scoring, it is w orthy of note that none o f th e tw enty-tw o batsm en failed to score in each innings. T h ou gh the m a tch w as over soon after three o ’clock 9.599 paid on th e secon d day. L a n c a sh ir e . F irst InniDgs. Second Innings. Mr. A. C.
