T hese conditions, how ever, did n o t apply in th eir m a tch w ith K ent b egu n at B eckenham , and as the g rou n d w ore b ad ly , as in previous years, th ey w ere placed at a great disadvantage in losing the toss. G oing in first, K ent w ere at the w ickcts n o t quite th ree hours fo r a to ta l o f 236. J. R . M ason, th e captain o f the W in ch ester C ollege eleven, w h o opened the batting w ith A lec H ea m e, m ade a very creditable debut fo r K ent, helpin g to pu t on 65 in forty-five m inutes fo r the first w icket. A fter th is H u m p h reys’ lobs f >roved very effective, so m u ch so th a t at the uncheon in terval the score w as on ly 135 w ith seven b atsm en out. T he rem ainder of th e innings w as rem ark able fo r a t rillia n t display o f cricket b y the captain . In ju st an h ou r h e p u t on 63, and on the resu m ption 66 w ere a id e d in thirty-five m inu tes. M arch an t’s hitting all roun d w as o f the finest description w ith ou t a m istake. W h en they w en t in the Sussex batsm en fou n d run s very difficu lt to get in fa ce o f th e excellen t ou t-crick et o f K ent. M arlow follow ed u p his dou ble success at the O val b y m aking 23 o f th e first 37 runs. L a te r on B ran n w as seen to som e advantage, stayin g a t th e w ickets an h o u r and a quarter fo r 31 ou t o f 56. O therw ise th e b attin g presented no feature w orth y o f com m ent, and ju st b efore tim e w as up on T hursday, the in nings, w h ich h a d lasted tw o hours and tw enty m inu tes, w as over fo r the sm all to ta l o f 98. In a m in ority o f 138 Sussex m ade a fairly g ood start on F riday, B ean and M arlow pu ttin g on 33 b efore th e form er w as out. M arlow , w ho again played ca p ital cricket, w as th ird o u t at 70, and w ith seven batsm en gon e fo r 99, it hardly look ed as if S ussex w ould avert an innings defeat. A s it w as, B ann fou n d a very usefu l partn er in H um phreys, and th e eighth w icket added 41 in a bou t th e sam e n u m ber of m inutes. B rann, w h o had b een in an h ou r and a quarter fo r his 30, how ever, soon follow ed H u m phreys, both ou t at 140, and as L ow e and T ate added eighteen fo r the la st w icket th e total reach ed 158. H eavy rain fall ju st previously caused the g rou n d to b e so ft even at the outset, and the superiority o f Y orkshire’s bow ling, particu larly as th e p itch w as, caused th e gam e to go all in their favour. T h e ch oice o f innings, too, w as an ad vantage fo r the Y orkshirem en, and th ou gh they lo st six o f th e best b atsm en fo r 71, th e total ulti m a tely reach ed th e very respectable sum of 162. T h e credit o f this perform a n ce rested m ain ly w ith B row n, M oorhouse, and B irst. T he last nam ed h it w ith great vigour ju st at the finish, and his 35 n o t ou t w as o f im m ense value to th e side. T he batsm en fou n d R ob erts’ bow lin g a nything bu t pleasan t as th e grou n d w as, and h e kept up his en d th rou gh ou t the innings, w h ich lasted three h ou rs, taking six o f th e t n w ickets at a cost of under ten runs a-piece. G loucestershire in their turn fared very bad ly w hen they w ent in to bat. P eel fou n d th e pitch exactly to his liking, and the on ly op p ositi n o f any im p orta n ce cam e from the G loucestershire captain . W .G . w as in forty-five m inu tes fo r his nineteen, bu t the oth er ten on ly added forty runs betw een them , and in a little over an h ou r and a h a lf th e w hole side had been dism issed fo r 74, o f w h ich fifteen w ere extras. P eel had a rem arkable analysis. In seventeen overs h e dism issed six b atsm en fo r on ly 27 runs. B ein g 88 behind, G loucestershire had to follow on, and in the h a lf h ou r th a t rem ained on T h rsday n igh t lost tw o w ickets fo r fourteen. O n F riday m orn in g the b a ll travelled a little m ore quickly, W .G . and R ice had pu t on 43 w hen th e form er w as ou t after an h ou r’s pla y fo r an exceedingly w ell pla yed score o f 31. A fter his retirem ent, though R ice w as in altogether tw o hours and a quarter fo r his 27, the batting generally w as o f the tam est, a n d th e last seven w ick ets w ere dism issed fo r an addition o f on ly 34 runs. T h is left Y orkshire w ith fou r to w in, and as H unter got these in on e h it G lou cestersh ire w ere beaten before lu n ch on F rid a y by ten w ickets.
