Cricket 1893

274 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. JULY 13, 1893 THE N INETEENTH MATCH—v. YORKSHIRE. Follow ing up their recent victories over the North, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire, the Aus tralian cricketers secured their fourth consecutive win at Leeds on Tuesday last.when they beat York shire ty 145 run?. Heavy rain just prior to the comm encem ent of the m atch made it certain that the game w ou’d te played out under conditions mostly favourable to the bowlers. As a conse quence, the choice of innings was of great im por tance, and in going in first the Australians secured a considerable advantage. Unfortunately for them , Lyons had to stand out owing to a cold, and on the treacherous wicket a hitter of his stamp m ight have teen very m uch missed. As it was, the Yorkshiremen, who were without F. 8. Jackson and A.Sellers, had mainly themselves to blame for the total the Australians made. Graham, M‘Leod, and Bannerman, who between them contributed 93 from the bat, were all missed, and the last two had each a couple of lives. The County eleven, in their turn, found the bowling o f Turner and Trumble particularly difficult, and w ith consider able help from the wicket, the trro Australian bowlers proved so effective that when rain stopped the game on M onday night six of the best bats m en had been dismissedifor only 53. Peel, w ho had been m issed overnieht, on Tuesday m orning found a useful partner in W aller, and thanks to this pair the Yorkshire eleven were after all only 47 behind when the tenth w icket fell. Turner’s bowl ing cam e out with excellent figures, and,as will be seen, his six wickets onlv cost six runs apiece. W hen the Austra'ians went in again, Peel and Wainwright made the very best use of a bow lers’ wicket, fo much so, indeed, that with six of the m ost reliable batsmen out the total was only 47. Any hopes that Yorkshire m ight then have had were settled by the good cricket of the Australian tail. W alter Giffen, M cLeod, and Trumble all played well, but fcy far the best show was that of Turner, who hit with great resolution, and eventu- a'ly carried out his bat for 41, the highest score of the m atch, with only one mistake when he had got 6. L eft with 194 to win, the early batsm en of Yorkshire failed so utterly that, when the eighth wicket fell, the score was only 11. By plucky cricket Peel and Hirst, however, averted the com plete collapse that seemed imm inent, and their stand realised 22 runs. At the finish, too, Hunter showed no sm all confidence, and in the end the total reached 48. Bruce and Turner bowled unchanged, and, as will be seen, only 127 balls were required for the dism issal of the York shire eleven. Turner’s share in the Australians’ victory was by no m eans a sm all one. In addi tion to 47 for once out, he took ten wickets at a cost of 5 runs a-piece. On the other side Peel scorcd 41 for once out, besides taking nine wickets for 83 runs. Bruce’s bow ling at the finish was quite out of the comm on. A ustralians . First Innings. Mr. A. C.
