Though the Leicestershire eleven were seen to better advantage when they followed on, the Australians got such a long lead on Thursday at Leicester in the early stages of the m atch, that the result was never afterwards in doubt. The absence of Bannerman, M cLeod, and Turner from the Australian team necessitated the intro duction of Coningham , who had not played for nearly a m onth. Blackham, too, reappeared, though, as will be seen, he deputed Jarvis to keep wicket Leicestershire were unfortunate enough to lose the toss, and as Pougher, owing to an injury to his wrist, was only able to bow l a few overs, they were placed at a serious disadvantage. Still, up to a certain point they did very well, and though Lyons opened well with three fours from the first three balls, things went so badly with the in-side that when thejfifih wicket fell the total was only 98. It was the stand of Trott and Gregory which turned the whole course of the gam e to the detrim ent of the county. In the first thirty-eight m inutes they put on 79, and altogether in an hour and forty minutes added as many as 167. Trott was missed badly at mid-off when he had made 63, but <therwise there was no flaw in the batting of either. Trott was in two hours and ten minutes, Gregory an hour and three- quarters, and the cricket while they were together was singularly lively and interesting. W hen Leicestershire went in Trott’s bowling was equally effective, and he helped to dis m iss the whole side in an hour and twenty m inutes for the sum total of 67. On Friday m orning in the follow on they again began very badly, De Trafford, Warren, and Chapman being out with the total only 19. Tom lin was the first batsm an on the side to play the Australian bow l ing with any confidence, and hitting with great resolution he scored 45 out of 51 runs in half an hour. After his dismissal Pougher alone shaped at all well against Trott’s bowling, and his play was the only redeeming feature of the latter part o f the innings. He was batting an hour and twenty minutes, and eventually carried out his bat for 50, a highly praiseworthy exhibition of cricket on a pitch already worn. The Australians had won, soon after the luncheon interval on Friday, by an inniogs and 51 runs. Trott’s all-round play was, as will be seen, the main factor in their success. Besides his score of 100, he took eleven wickets at a cost of under eight runs apiece, a fine perfor m ance. George Giffen’s eight wickets cost 82 runs. A ustralians . H. Turre'l, b Bull ... 27 Capt.
