Cricket 1893

264 CRICKET: A WEEKLY BECORD OF THE GAME, JULY 13, 1898 AT THE ETON AND HARROW MATCH. S cen e . —Lord's Cricket Ground on the day of the match. (One of the players has just had his wicket shattered, and the schoolfellows of the shatterer are exuberant; those of the shat- teree correspondingly downcast). C horus of the former: “ Well b-o-w*l-e-d, b-o-w-l-ed, b o-w -l-e-d ! ” M other of one of the downcast ones (to her son, who is sitting before her on a coach, talking to a companion): “ What is all the noise about, Tommy ? ” T o m m y : “ Oh, one of our fellows has just been bowled, that’s all. They needn’t make such a row about it, he’s a jolly rotten bat. Wait till Eves comes in.” M other : “ Who is Eves, dear ? ” T ommy : “ Eves is the captain. He knows how to bat. H e’ll fetch one over the Pavilion, you see.” M other : “ They’re still shouting. Is it all for the same thing? What a noise they do make.” T o m m y : “ Yes, it’s because they’ve got a stand and they’ re all together. It’s a jolly shame. We ought to have one.” M other : “ Why haven’t you, dear ? ” T ommy : “ I don’t know ; but we haven’t.” M other : “ It seems very unfair. I’ll get your father to write to the head master. Oh ! he’s coming back. Tommy, dear, he wasn’ t out, he’s coming back.” T om m y ; “ No, this is another fellow. Oh! I say, Tnevor,”— (to his companion)—“ here’s Eves ! begi ns to clap). (The batsman takes his place at the wicket, and, after playing a few balls, hits one to the boundary.) T o m m y : “ By Jove! that was a fine drive. I shouldn’ t be surprised if he gets that hundred pounds. You know tbey give you a hundred pounds if you break the clock.” T r e v o r : “ Y es,/h ea rd that. Is it tru e ? ” T o m m y : True? Rather! 1 knew a xuan who got it. By Jove! there’s another. W-e-1-1 hit. I say, mother, Eves is plajing finely, isn’t he ? ” M other : “ He seems to be hitting the ball about. I’m rather afraid he’ll send one here.” T ommy ; “ Afraid ! I wish he would. I shouldn’t be surprised if he did. He’s a splendid fellow, Eves. He’s one of the best fellows I know.” M o th e r : “ You’d better ask him to come and stay with us, dear, if he’s so nice.” Tom m y: “ Come and stay with us? Catch him at it. You won’t find Eves coming to stay with us. Why, they’ll make him a member of the M.C.U. if he gets his century. What’ s that? Out! Leg before! Oh! What a beastly swindle. He was no more out than fly.” M other : “ What’s ‘ fly,’ darling? ” T o m m y : “ Oh, nothing; it’ s only a part of speech.” M o t h e r : “ Figure of speech, you mean, dear.” T o m m y : “ All right; figure of spefch. But I never saw anything so bad as that.” M o t h e r : “ So bad as what, Tommy ? Why are you angry ? ” T omm \ : “ Anybody would be mad. Those fellows bring down a fool of an umpire, who doesn’t know a bat from a spring chicken, and he swindles all our men out.” M o t h e r : “ That certainly seems a shame. I’ll get your father to write to the head master.” Tomm y : “ Ob, no, I shouldn’t bother. Here’s Watson. I don’ t think they’ll cheat him out.” (The batsman comes in, and snicks a ball into the slips which is stopped. His comrade at the other end calls out “ Not yet,” which sounds like anything to the spectators.) T ommy : “ Oh! I say, Trevor, did you hear that ? ” T r e v o r T om m y: wicket.11 M other (who has been surveying the field for sometime): “ Tommy, I don’ t think you can win, can you ? ” T ommy : “ Win ! Do you hear that, Trevor? The mater Aoesn’t think we shall win. You : “ No. What was i t ? ” “ They appealed fo r a catch at the wait and see. We shall give them the finest thrashing they ever had in their lives.” M o t h e r : “ Well, you know better than I do, of course; but it seems rather unfair to me. I can only see two on yoar side, and there are ever so many of the others. There! That’s what I said. T h ey’re beaten, Tommy. They’re all going in. Don’t go and fight, darling. Remember your new top hat.” T ommy : “ No, it’s all right. It’s only lunch time. Come on, Trevor; let’s go and have a look at the pitch.” B A RE ES v.
