Cricket 1893
JULY 6, 1893 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME- 257 than 11 runs each. After that, there need be no hesitation in playing him for England. Yorkshire might have done better, and they might have done worse. Wardall’s experience —out first ball each innings—was remarkable, but not unique. Didn’t somebody (name had better be suppressed) from Middlesex share a precisely similar fate at Surrey’s hands only last year? Wainwright (34 and 66) and Brown (64) did well enough, and if Peel had only had a wicket to his taste, such as he had just left at Nottingham, York shire might not now be pondering a ten wickets defeat—the finale of about as disas trous a fortnight as we could have had. Space and time gone, and not a word about the Australians, or the doings of the “ Blues ” preliminary to their annual meeting at Lord’s to-day. If ever there were a •*really good thing ” in oricket, that must be Cambridge. Yet one recalls last year’ s match, when all the prophets were capsized, and despised Oxford ran home an easy first. I don’t think Oxford have won a match this year, whilst Cambridge I remember being beaten only thrice. Sussex have taken both down, thanks largely to Mailow the rejected. That innings of 503 at Lord’ s last week must have given Oxford the shivers. Isn’ t that the third highest innings ever scored by either University in a first-class match ? Oxford’ s 613 v. Middlesex in 1876, and Cambridge’ s 703 for 9 wickets against Sussex three years ago, beat it of course ; are there any others ? Shrewsbury’ s match was in every way delightfully satisfactory, save for its early conclusion. Everything came off for England ; our great batsmen were in their happiest vein, and, thanks to the rain, the bowling ably seconded the batting. A one-innings thrash ing was scarcely counterbalanced by the three wickets defeat of the North, especially as the latter had to take the field without the two great Notts batsmen. But ought not Hunter to have played at Trent Bridge ? Storer may be a brilliant stumper, but I have seen no one this year to compare with the Yorkshireman. S c ra ps .— Perhaps after Surrey’s latest victory, we shall hear nothing more from those simpletons who want the follow-on law altered. Middlesex followed on after sooring 108 against Surrey; and naturally the Surrey bowlers were played out by that prodigious score. Poor dears ! Save us from our friends. I want all matches to be finished, and none to be drawn ; hence my contention with the scribblers on this “ follow-on ” business, W . G. tells a good story somewhere about one of his team refusing certain hospitalities at Scarborough (I think) because he wanted to retire early and so be fit for batting first the next morning. He was ciphered; the rest, who had been making merry overnight, all scored heavily. And Daft has an even better story about a batsman, ho anxious he couldn’ t sleep, and who in early morning was seen playing an imaginary innings on the house top, just to get hand and eye in. He, tcto, retired without troubling the scorers. But I must hurry off to Bradford. WOODFORD W E L L S v. BUCKHURST H ILL.— Played at Buckhurst H ill on June 10. LONDON SCOTTISH v.
