Cricket 1893

JCJNE 29, 1893 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 239 T H E T O N B R ID G E W E E K . KENT v. LANCASH IRE. Rain unfortunately interfered considerably with the first m atch of the Tonbridge week, which began on Monday. Owing to the recent rainfall the wioket at the outset was slow and the choice of innings in this case did not confer any advan tage. On the contrary, Kent, who were without Messrs. W. H. Patterson, L. Wilson, and W. L. Knowles, as well as Walter H earne, found run getting in the early part o f Monday anything but easy. Under the circum stances their total of 152 runs was by r o m eans a discreditable per form ance. The best batting was shown by the old Oxonian, Mr. Rashleigh, and George Hearne. They put on 61 runs for the eighth w icket, and their plucky cricket when the game was in anything but a satisfactory con dition for their side'.deserved the highest praise. The ground had dried considerably by the time Lancashire went in, and so well did Mr. M c Laren and W ard utilise their opportunities that T9 were made without a mistake before the latter was bowled. Mr. M cLaren, who was out at 105, was in an hour and forty minutes for his 61. and before play ceased Sugg was also dismissed, the score at the finish showing 117 with only three batsm en out. Rain prevented play on Tuesday, and yesterday, the later bfttsmen of Lancashire found the bowling of F a 'tin and Alec Hearne so puzzling that the innings was finished for an addition of bat 40 runs. Kei t who wtre five runs to 1h9 lad, on comm encing their second innings in their turn fared badly. Six wickets were down when Mr. Marchant and Martin becam e partners. B oth batsmen hit vigorously, and at lunch time, when Mr. Marchant was caught, 48 had been added. Martin con- t inued to hit away afler the renewal and bis 65 was invaluable to the side, fairly changing the whole aspect of the game. Mold took eight of thwten wickets for 87 runs. W ith 172 to win Lancashire made a m ost disastrous start, losing three of their best wickets for only five runs. M artin followed up his excellent perform ance with the bat by som e equally effective bowling taking five wickets at a cost of 27 runs. He was chiefly instrumental in dismissing Lancashire for 104, which left Kent with a very creditable win by 71 runs. In the m atch Martin took ten Lancashire wickets at a cost of under eight runs a piece. K ent . First Innings. Second Innings. A. Hearne, b M old ........... 4 c Benton, b Mold ........... 9 Mr. G.
