Cricket 1893
JUNE 29, 1893 CRICKETs A WEEKLY RECORD Qtf THE GAME* 238 cricket can’t be played too strictly, but here is surely a case where it’s better to be gener ous than law-abiding. Notch No. 2.—Did T. 0 .O’Brien tread upon, or in some other way hit the wicket during his long innings against Surrey ? Wood, I see it reported, says he did, and one must believe him. But umpire could not give him out, not being certain. I don’t know who the umpire was ; that’s of no moment ; all I say is, ac n’t censure him for not seeing. As usual I was umpiring on Saturday. By-the-bye, I am a terrible stickler and martinet now—a perfect terror to lax and lawless cricketers. Thus, I won’t allow any fielder to handle the bat whilst waiting for the next man to come in, because law No. 18 says I must not. It is astonishing to find that most club oricketers have never heard of the existence of that law. W p H, I was standing at short-leg on Saturday, a big leg-hitter was in, and a slow leg-break bowler went on. I had a very uncomfortable time of it, my one thought was my own bodily Bafetv ; batsman seemed to be keep ing up a perfect cannonade, with me as his mark, until I forgot everything. It would have been impossible for me to see much that ought to have been seen, with that frightful bat of his sweeping round after time. Another thing noticed was th is: the sun was getting low in the West, at short- leg I was directly in the line of i t ; the crease was wholly invisible, as I pointed out to the captain: it was all right when to a left- handed batsman I stood on the opposite side of the wicket, having the sun behind me. I could nol have given a batsman “ stumped,” unless he had got well up the pitch. So be patient with umpires. Olla Podrida or Scraps .—The “ Old Buffer” writes me again that, owing to the ice not breaking up, he won’t be here as early as he hoped.—With a boundary hit reckoned as fou r , ought it to be possible to count five for a hit short of the boundary ?— W ill correspondents kindly bear in mind that I cannot answer their questions pri vately, but will promise to do so in these Notches whenever I deem a qaestion likely to interest most readers.
