Cricket 1893
222 CRICKET; A WEEKLY EECORD OF THE GAME. JUNE 22, 1893 YORK SH IRE v. LANCASHIRE. The Lancashire eleven had the satisfaction on Tuesday, at Leeds, of perform ing a feat which M iddlesex, Sussex, Surrey, and Somersetshire had all in turn essayed unsuccessfully. The defeat o f Yorkshire in this m atch was their first reverse o f this season. Lancashire can therefore congratulate itse f on a double victory, in each case of some im portance, during the last few days. For this w eek’s m atch both Counties were well re presented. Thewicket, though, was not of the best, and as a consequence batsm en were generally seen to disadvantage. This was hardly the case at the comm encem ent c f the m atch, and, indeed, Mr. Sellers, W ardall, and T unnc’iffe played up so well that Yorkshire, w ho went in first, had eighty up with only two batsm en out. Their success, how ever, received a rude check there, and helped by excellent fielding, Briggs and Mold proved so effective that the eight remaining wickets all fell in dou 'le quick tim e for an addition of only 27 runs. The Lancashire eleven in their turn found run-getting, as the wicket was, no easy m atter. Still they played up with great confi dence, and in the three hours that were left on M onday scored 128 for the jo s s of sixw ickefs. The chief credit for t-eir good show belonged to Mr. M cLaren. For two hours and three-quarters he m et all the Yorkshire bowling with unvarying steadiness. Nor could a chance of any lind be urged in disparagement of a sound and painstakiDg display o f batting. Lancashire, who at the end of the first day were 21 on with four wickets in hand, on Tuesday m orning, thanks to the good cricket o f C. Smith and Mr. Crofifie7d, had increased their advantage to 62 by the time the last wicket fell. In tte second innings the Yorkshiremen m ade only a poor show. Briggs’ bowling proved too m uch for them, and Wardall alone of the batsm en displayed any confidence. As it was, w hile he m ade 25, ten others could only account for 24 between them. The innings in fact only reached a total of 53, so that Lancashire won *ith an innings and nine runs to spare. The chief factor in this success undoubtedly was Briggs. In the m atch he took twelve wickets at a cost of just over 6 runs apiece. Y orkshire . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. A.
