After the m oderate form shown by the Austra lians against a weak team of the South at the Oval last week, on paper their chances against the Players at Lord’s in the match begun on Monday could hardly have been regarded as very Irigbt. Stil', as the result showed, the presence of the captain and Mr. Giffen had an im portant influence cn the all-round cricket of the side, and they won in a style which will remove, to some extent, the effect o f their ricent ill success. Though, with Kent, Lancashire, jliddlesex, and Yorkshire all engaged, it was not possible to secure a thoroughly representative side of the Players sti 1 the eleven chosen was a fairly good one. At the last m om ent, however, Shrews bury had to cry off, and Chatterton was included in his place. This time the Australians were lucky enough to win the toss, and although Mr. Giffen failed to score the early latsm en on M onday did so well that 131 was up by luncheon. The wicket had from the first played rather queer y and on the resum ption Tyler’s slow bowling proved so effective that the three remaining wickets fell in less than an hour for 55. o f which the last two batsmen. Messrs. Blackham and Turner, m ade 59. T rott’s 48 was the best feature of the innings, which lasted two hours and three quarters. He was in an hour and ten minutes without a chance. The batting of the Players proved m ost disappointing. Messrs. Trum ble and M ‘Leod began the Australian bowling, and the form er bowled with such remarkable success that in an hour and forty minutes the whole side had been dismissed for 8?. Five bats men got double figures, but the highest was Chatterton’s 18, which occupied him an hour and a quarter. Messrs. Tium ble and M cLeod bowled unchanged, and the former had an exceptionally good analysis, taking seven wickets in twenty- one overs for only 31 ruos. Following on 100 runs to the bad, the Players had half an hour left for batting on Monday night, in which tim e Gunn and Cnatterton made 33 without the loss of a wicket. On Tuesday the two not outs added 41 before Gunn was out, and as Bean, who came next, stayed till the score was 110, there was som e chance of a good finish. As it wag, Mr. Trumble again bowled with great effect, and when he cam e on a second time he told with signal success, bis last fifteen overs resulting in the dismissal of seven batsmen at an expense of only 53 iuns. Though the collapse of the later batsmen left the Aus ralians with only 71 to win, with Messrs. Lyons, Bannerman, and Troit ou tfor 23, the result was fairly open. Messrs. Giffen and Bruce, however, played with great judgm ent at the crisis, and when the form er was out at 88, it was lefu to Messrs. Bruce and Graham to finish the m atch, which was won by the Australians with six wickets in hand. It was a very creditable victcry, the result of capable all-round play. Mr. Truroble’s bowling, though overthadowed the otner cricket. In the m atch, he took fourteen wickets at a cost of just over eight runs apiece. A u stra lia n s.—First Innings. Mr. J. J.
