Cricket 1893
JUNE 8, 1893 CRICKET s A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 208 indeed, proved too much for them, and in the hour and a half that remained, four wickets went down for 80. On Saturday, Sussex had nothing to play for but a draw, and thanks to the good play of the captain, Bean, Hr. Newham, and the free hitting of Guttridge in the first inn gs, they man aged to save the game. Mr.Murdoch a id Guttridge, in an hour and a quarter in tbe morning, added 87, of which the professional’s share was 50, the out come of well-timed hitting. The captain was bat ting just under three hours and three-quarters for his 75, in which was little or no fault. Though Sussex had to follow on just after three o’clock on Saturday afternoon, the earlier batsmen were seen to such advantage that a defeat was hardly within measurable distance. Mr. Murdoch again played capital cricket, and Bean, Mr. Newham, and Mr. Brann also lent useful assistance. The result was that at the finish 264 had been made, for the loss of six batsmen. Sussex, therefore, still wanted 189 to save an innings defeat, with four wickets in hand, a very creditable performance after the big score against them. In the three days 1159 runs were made for twenty-six wickets, substantial proof of the excellence of the pitch. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. Neither county was at all well represented in this match, begun at Leicester on Monday. Mr. Dixon, Gunn, Flowers, and Shacklock were none of them able to help Notts, while on the other hand Leicestershire was without Mr. De Trafford, Warren, Whiteside, and Mr. W. »E. Arnall. Leicestershire, who were 84 behind on the first innings, made a very different show when they went in a second time. Though they lost three good batsmen for twenty, thanks to the ex cellent cricket of Holland and Tomlin, who added 147 while they were together, 236 runs had been made at a cost of only four wickets when play ceased on Tuesday night. Yesterday the last Leicestershire wicket fell at 275, and as Notts in the fourth innings were all dismissed for 134 the home team won a glorious victory by 57 runs Pougher and Mr. Bennett each took ten wickets for their respective sides. The former’s cost 127, the latter 112 runs. Tomlin and Holland scored 177 of 259 from the bat in Leicestershire’s seeond innings. In Notts' second innings Finney go 5five wickets for 36.
