Cricket 1893
JUNE 15, 1893 CRICKET r A WEEKLY RECORD THE GAME; 2 0 1 ESSEX y. YORKSHIRE. Though they were fairly successful just at the commencement of this match at Leyton on Thursday, the Essex eleven were in the result outplayed at all points, and had to put up with a decisive defeat by ten wickets. The first day’s play was all in favour of Yorkshire, who, after dismissing their opponents for 184, scored 138 with only three batsmen out. Essex, who were 119 behind on the first innings, lost six wickets in the Second for 43. Some good cricket by Freeman, who ultimately carried out his bat for 41, and Mr. Gosling, however, enabled them to save the innings, the last three wickets adding 101 runs. This left Yorkshire with 26 to win, which Tunnicliffe and Mounsey got without difficulty Essex were without Messrs. C. J. Kortright and A. S. Johnston. E ssex . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. H. The Marylebone eleven had an easy win in this match, played at Lord’s on Thursday and Friday last, having 21 runs and an innings in hand at the finish. The chief features of the cricket were the fine innings of Dr. W. G. Grace, and the good bowling of Davidson and Pougher for M C.C. side, the excellent batting of Rev. F. Meyrick-Jones, and effective bowling of Alec Hearne for Kent. During the three hours and a quarter he was in, W. G. made very few faulty strokes, none that could be construed into a chance. His play was characterised by great freedom, and all round the wicket he was seen to equal advantage. Meyrick- Jones, the old Cantab who used to play for Hants, made his first appearance for Kent in this match. He scored 96 for once out. In the second innings he hit with great vigour, making 45 out of 53 in fifty minutes. M.C.C. Mr. W. G. Grace, c Hibberd, b G. Hearne ..................128 Mr. J. J. Ferris, b A.
