Cricket 1893
200 CRICKET: A WEEKLY KECORD OF THE GAME. JUNE 15, 1893 LANCASHIRE v. SURREY. " Although the first stages of this match at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Thursday, were con siderably in favour of Lancashire, the Surrey eleven subsequently played up so well as to be able in the end to claim a very creditable victory. Winning the toss, Lancashire got first use of a good wicket, and Mr. McLaren andWard, profiting by the opportunity, put on 81 in an hour by excellent cricket. Some vigorous cricket by Sugg a little later enabled the home team to maintain their advantage, and at luncheon time on Thurs day the score was 164 with only four batsmen out. Soon afterwards Sugg, who had made 55 out of 83 while he was in, was caught, and though Messrs. Crosfield and Kemble made a useful stand the tail made but a moderate show, the last six wickets only adding 66 runs. This year the Surrey eleven have generally made a bad start, and again the early batsmen failed, the total only being 31 when the fourth wicket fell. Fortunately for them, an opportune stand by Messrs. Key and Read prevented what appeared likely to he a very poor score. The two amateurs named added 65 while they were together, and Mr. Read was still in when play ceased on Thursday night with 85 to his credit. The score then was 147 with seven wickets down, and as Surrey were 83 behind there was every reason to believe that they would be in a deficit on the first innings. As it was, Mr. Read found a very useful partner in Brockwell, and while these two were together some of the best cricket of the match was seen. Brock well added 41 out of 112 by excellent cricket, and as Richardson as well as Marshall gave little trouble, Mr. Read was able to carry out his bat. A better display of cricket than his score of 174 there could not be. From the first he was quite at home with the Lancashire bowling, and when he got the measure of it he scored freely all round the wicket. Though he was batting for three hours and a half, in all this time he hardly made a faulty stroke, none that could fairly be called a chance. In a minority of 33 runs, Lancashire again began in promising fashion. Lockwood’s bowling, however, gave the game a turn alto gether in favour of Surrey, and though Baker and Tinsley both scored freely for a time, the total was only 121 when the tenth wicket well. Surrey had to go in with 89 to win at the finish, and this sum cost them three good wickets. Runs, too, came so slowly, that play had to be prolonged half an hour to admit of a finish on Friday night. It took over two hours to make the 89, and the only noteworthy feature was the steady cricket of Abel. After recent disappointments his success must have been particularly gratifying to him, as it was beyond a doubt to the general body of cricketers. L ancashire . First Innings. A.
