Cricket 1893

JUNE 1, 1893 iDEttOBETs A WEEKLY RECOED OF THE GAME, 177 THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. B righton . —We have had no regular match during the last week, but have played against three scratch elevens. Each tinbe, after getting our opponents out fairly successfully, we have failed terribly with the bat, being dismissed for the poor totals of 37, 55, and 40. The bowling is rather better than was to be ex pected, and fielding gradually improving, though not yet by auy means perfect. M alvebn . —On Saturday we played our first match against Exeter College, Oxford. Our opponents went in first and ran up the very respectable total of 232,to which Holdship contributed 83, and H. K Atkinson 30. We began very, badly, losing our first wicket when the score was at 7. W, W . Lowe, however, enlivened matters considerably, making 22 in about ten minutes.. On the drawing of stumps we had seven wickets down for 166 (H. H. . Marriott 24). We were unfortuuate in losing the services of G. H. Nevile, our successful bowler last year, who is now sufferingfrom a strain. OnTuesday, May 30th, we were opposed by a strong team from Kast Gloucestershire. The School made 151, which included an innings of 36 by Lowe. Owing to the good bowling of Nevile our opponents were dismissed for 66, and in the follow on for 160. H adley C ollege . —The eleven had all the w'orst of their annual match with the Old R tdleians on May 22. The School, who were without Bailey, Lee, and Bradford, made a good start, Webb and Chunock putting on 38 before the latter was out. After that the bowling of the Oxonian L. C. V. Bathurst was so successful that only 26 were added by the last nine wickets. Bathurst took six wickets for 15 runs. The O.R.’s scored 135, of which C. S. Langley made 43, and A, L. Nelson 27. In the second innings H. S. Chunock made 25 of a total of 77 for nine wickets. The BradCeli match is fixed for June 24. R f . pton . —On Thursday the 24th, Lincoln Lindum, captained by Mr. Wells-Coles, visited Repton to try conclusions with the School. The visitors, who won the toss, elected to bat, but only succeeded in putting together 103, Bryant and Busby dismissing the whole team. The School went in and passed their opponents’ total with only two wickets down. After this the rest went fast, and with a score of 164 defeated the Lincoln Lindum by 61 runs. Broadbent did most execution for the visitors. For the School Davenport (32) and Busby (50) played exceedingly well, especially the latter, who hit very freely. R ossall . —Two matches were played last week, and both won. In the first, against the Common Room, our opponents batted first, and scored 94 (Mr. Rowe 15, Mr. Clarke 20). We then made 108 (Berney 21, Newett 20, Royds 21). In their second innings, C.R. made 79 (Mr. Clarke, 33 not out), leaviDg us 66 to get, which we did for the loss of four wickets (Newett 20). O. Andrews was most successful with the ball, securing nine wickets. In the seoond match against Lytham C. and G., Berney again lost the toss. After a very inauspicious start, during which our fielding was very faulty, matters went well for us, and they were all out for 87 (F. E. Rowe 16, T. SankeyA25). Weir bowled Berney* and Matthews and King were caught off him. Newett and Stone then raised the tCtal to 78, when the latter was rUn out. Capital form was shown by the new choices, and we were not got rid of till 205 had been scored (Newett 59, Thwaites 39, Royds 32). For the school, Andrews got six wickets and King 4. S h e r b o r n e .-— Our first match was agninst Mr. Wilson’s Eleven on May 20, which we won by an innings and 1 run. Painter, our coach, has not yet been able to give us his services at all. This has been a decided draw back, but we are expecting hikn down on June 7. U ppingham .— On May 22nd and 23rd we played our first match against a fairly good side of the M.C.C. The visitors batted first, but were dismissed for the small score of 107, to which the school replied with 240, Bell (85), Birley (50). and Holroy (37) playing excellent cricket- The club reached 163 in their second innings, leaviug the school 31 to win. This task was accomplished with the loss of one wicket. Bell, not out ‘20, again played well. Our next match is ag^inbt the Quidnuncs to morrow and Saturday. Birley has received his colours. W estm inster S chool —On Saturday we played the Zingari, who brought a very strong team against us. They unfortunately won the toss, and compiled213. We were lucky in getting rid of Foley and Parnvacini as cheaply as we did, but Maude hit mercilessly, and though he was missed in tbe dtep field when he had not reached double figures yet his innings cf 100 was very praiseworthy. D. Shearme bowled best for us, taking six wickets for 75 runs. We opened our innings disastrously, More being caught almost immediately. Later on, however, Sherring and Armstrong made a capital stand, and had brought the score to 109 when Armstrong was dismissed for 25. Sherring played very well indeed for 34, and later on Olderson showed capital form for 44 not out. The innings eventually closed for 179. They went in again and had scored 41 for two wickets when stumps were drawn. ST. PAUL’S SCHOOL v. DULWICH COLLEGE —Played on May 27. D ulwich . E. S. Hurlbatt, b Sutton .................11 8.
