JUNE 1, 1893 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 178 LEICESTERSHIRE v. YORKSHIRE. Yorkshire had an easy victory over theLeicester- shire eleven at Leicester on Saturday afternoon. The result of Thursday’s play was all in favour of Yorkshire, who had made 129 for the loss of only two wickets against a total of 156. ^ ardall and Brown put on 174 eventually for their part- nership.and Peel was more successful than cither, remaining in three hours and a half for 121^got i wainwrighc ^owied with remarkable" success on without a chance. Going in a se con d ’h™6 1a pitch which gave them considerable assistance, Friday in a minority of 26o, Leicestershire *o an(i the last eight wickets only added 38 runs, six wickets for 63 . On Saturday i^jning^jonly 18 p eei>8 ana'ysis was especially good. His seven ” " wickets only cost 57 runs. Bean made 58 out of 92 while he was in, and his hitting was invaluable as the ground was. The commencement of Yorkshire’s innings offered a great contrast to that of Sussex. Six of the best batsmen went down before the Y0RK8HIRE v. 8US9EX. Heavy rain prevented the delivery of a ball in this match at Leeds on Monday, and as a conse quence the game subsequently went all in favour i of the bowlers. As the ground wa*, Sussex were lucky to get first innings on Tuesday, and so well did Bean utilise the opportunity while the wicket was fairly easy that 8J was up with only two bat*- |men out. After Bean’s dismissal, though, Peel and J. GIBSON’S XL v. BROMLEY.—Played Bromley (Kent) on May 27. J. G ibson ’ s XL 15 were added, so that the Yorkshiremen won by an innings and 185 runs. In Leicestershire’s second innings Hirst took five wickets for 28 runs. L e icestersh ire . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. C. E. De Trafford, Brown, b Moorhouse . Hunter and Hirst, however, not only saved the follow on but in the end got within 14 runs of the opposite total. Both batsmen played with excellent judgment as well as p:uck, and their partnership, which pro duced 50 runs, was productive of some of the best cricket of the day. Going in again, Sussex lost Bean in the thirty five minutes left for play on Tuesday, so that they finished the day 44 runs to the good with nine wickets to fall. Hi ton, a-slow left-handed bowler, was very successful with the ball for Sussex. His seven wickets were got at a cost of less than 7 runs apie«e. The ground yesterday still sssisted the bowlers materially, and the batsmen generally found it difficult to score. At the outset Sussex could do nothing against the bowling of Wainwright and Peel, and in just* an hour the nine remaining wickets fell for an increase of only 31 runs. Wainwright’d figures were quite exceptional. He got rid of six batsmen at a cost of only 16 runs. Tr ough they only had 76 to win, the resu't was anything but a certainty for Yorkshire. As it was, they lost six wickets be fore the winning run was made, and for this success they were mainly indebted to the good play of Tunnic iffe. Though half the side w re out for 56. he continued to play with great confidence and judgment, and when Yorkshire had won by four wickef 8, as they ultimately did, he was still in, with a thoroughly played 31 to his credit. The Warwickshire Eleven made an excellent show against Notts in this match, played at Bir mingham, at the end of last week, i’hey very nearly, indeed, saved the gam*, as Notts, who won by eight wickets, only had ten minutes to spare on Saturday afternoon. Though Notts were with out Mr. Dixon, as weil as Attewell and Shacklock, the rfsult of the game was distinctly creditable to the all-round cricket of Warwickshire. W arw ickshire . First Innings.
