Cricket 1893
154 CRICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. MAY 25, 1893 M IDDLESEX v. SOM ERSETSH IRE. It was unfortunate in the face of the strong com bination Middlesex was al le to place in the field at L o r i s on Monday that Somersetshire was weakened by the absence of Messrp. W. C. Hedley, V. T. Hill, J. B. ChalJen, and L . C. H. Palairer. U nder such circum stances a victory for Middlesex was generally expected, and after a tim e the game went altogether in their favour. The Somerset shire captain was foxtunate enough to win the toss and hit with such vigour in conjunction with Mr. Fowler that 110 was up before the latter, who had m ade 51 iu an hour and ten minutep, was out. At )uB«h tim e on Monday the score was 154 for two wickets, and imm ediately on the resum ption Mr. Bew ttt was out. He had made exactly one half of the total, and though he was lucky at times in placing the ball, as a display of free hitting it was worthy of ail praise. After his dismissal cam e a great collapse, and the innings, which had begun with such promise, only realised a total of 235, eight wickets M iing after luncheon for an addition of 81 runs. W hen Midd'e ex went in Messrs. 8to3dart and Scottwere soon dismissed. Mr. W ebbe, however, f^und a useful partner in Mr. Foley, who made his first appearance for Middlesex in this match. In a hour and a quarter 116 were added, and then Mr. Foley was bowled for an excellent 56. w hich only contained one chance, at the wicket when he had made 46. Just as play was up on Monday Mr. W ebbe was caujht at the w icket. His 74 was got in an hour and fifty minutes, and was absolutely free from m is takes. Middlesex, w ho had then made 175 for the loss of four batsmen, thanks to seme vigorous cricket by Mr. O’Brien and Rawlin, added 67 <n the following morning before they were separated. After this, with the exception of the steady play of Mr. Nepean, there was nothing noteworthy in the innings, which closed for 292. In a m inority of 57 Somersetshire began their second innings very inauspiciously. as Messrs. Hewett, Robins >n, Fow ler, and Roe were all out for only 25 runp. Som e lively hitting by Messrp. W oods and Trask, w ho put on forty-one in fifteen m inutes, gave a m om entary relief. Still, though the last wicket also added 4', the result was only a m oderate total of 157. Ih is lefc M iddlesex with 1 >6 to win, and to f*at did Messrs. W ebbe and Stoddart score, that it seemed as if they would accom plish the task themselves in less than an hou-. As it was, w ith 73 as the result o f just over thirty minutes, Mr. Stoddart was bowled. Mr. Fowler also dismissed Messrs. W ebbe and Scott before the 28 still waut- ing were got. so that Middlesex won in the end with seven wickets to spare. S om ersetshire . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. G.
