Under ordinary circum stances, with no gr at am ount o f bowling on either side, the meetings between these counties just now may fairly te expected to produce scoring above ihe average. Nor was the m atch begun at Brighton on Monday an exception to the rule, though the run-getiing hardly, perhaps, cam e up to expectations. Sussex, who went in first, were at the wickets three houra and ten minutes. All the first eight batsmen got into double figures, although only two got over eighteen runs. The best feature of theinnings was the free cricket of Mr. Smith, who was in less than an hour arid three quarters for bis runs.Glouc. ster- shire began tadly in losiug W.G. and Painter for twenty-one t etween them. Mr. Rice, the Oxonian, was in som e time, but the best batting was in the last hour, and in this tim e Messrs. Ferris aud Kitcat added 72 runs. On the following m orning the Sussex bowlers were handicapped by an easy wicket as well us a wet tall, ana the not outs scored freely, adding 51 runs iu just over an hour. Still, after the separation o f Messrs. Ferris and Kitcat no one made any £t<y except M urcti, who bit freely at the close, and finally carried out his bat for a very useful tcore of thirty-eight. Mr. Ferris made I16. his first ecore o f three figures in an im portant m atch. Be tatted with great judgm ent and there was only one possible chance during the tbree hours and twenty minutes he was in, Mr. W ilson and Bean opened the seaond iunings of Sussex, who were 95 to the bad. Both battm en were in brilliant form and none of the Gloucestershire bowling troubled them at all. The first hour produced 70, the second 100 runs, and the score in two hours and twenty minutes had fcpen taken to 2|7 before Mr. Wi son wus caught at point. H.s 1<5 was, with the exception of one nard chance at 63, at tolute y faultless Tate, who cam s next, was caught without scoring, and then play ceased for the day, Bean being not out J07. The t atting yesterday uuring the remainder of the innings offered a rem arkable contrast to that of the previous evening, After seeing Messrs. Mur- doofi&nd Braun, as well as GijttricJge, dismissed for an addition of 87, Bean was at last caught at" tho wicket. in three hours he had scored J2o, and there was no blemish of any k.nd to urge against; a m ost exemplary ctffpl&y of free and punishing cricket. After his retirem ent only iorty runs w -re added, so that the innings closed for 291. With 200 to win Gloucestershire lost W . G. at twelve, and Mr. Radcliffe at 23. Painter and Mr. Ferris raised the total to 127, and with only two batsmen out, Gloucester shire’s Buccess seemed assured. H um phreys’ lobs, however, worked a rem arkable change. He got rid of both batsmen in quick succession, and although Messrs. 15. M. Grace, D eW in ton , and Kitcat all tried hard to determine the result in favour of the r side, Sussex were able to claim a very creditable victory with only 3 runs to spare. Their win was due essentially to Humphrey s bowling. He took seven of the iast eight wickets at a cost of 30 runs. S ussex . First Innings. Bean, c Rice, b Murch ... 12 Mr. G. f .
