MAY 25, 1893 tililCKET s A WEiilJliiY KKUUIiD yjof XHJii UAJliS,. 149 CR ICKET AT CAMBR IDGE . CAMBRIDGE U N IV ERSITY v. YORKSH IRE. H eavy rain on the previous afternoon caused the wicket to be all in favour of the bowlers even at the commancement of the m atch at Cambridge on Thursday. As a consequence run getting was difficult, and the outcom e o f the first day’s play was only an aggregate of 218 runs for twenty-two wickets. The ground at the outset suited Peel to a nicety, and he bowled with such success that five o f the University wickets were dismissed in fifty minutes for twenty-six runs. The first bats man to offer any resistance was Mr. Wells, who hit freely for his 26. The beet stand was, however, by the last two batsmen, MesBrs. Brom ley Daven port and Pope, who put on 47 runs for the tenth wicket, a m ost useful contribution. Peel’s figures were particularly noteworthy. Altogether he took eight wickets for 54 runs, and just at the close his analysis showed teven wickets in eighteen oversat an expense of twenty-eight runs. Short as had been Cambridge’s innings—its duration was under two hours and a half—that of Yorkshire was e.en shorter. Messrs. Brom ley Davenport and Jackson in their turn derived a good deal of assistance from the wicket, and only two batsmen, Brown and Mounsey, got double figures. In an hour and 40 minutes the Yorkshire eleven had been in and out, and as their total only reached 8 i the University had a useful lead of 38 runs on the first innings. Cambridge had three- quarters of an hour left for batting on Thursday night, and in that tim e lost two good wickets while scoring 39 runs. Though the ground was a little faster than on Thursday, the battirg generally showed little improvement. Hirst bowled with considerable success during the l itter part of th3 U niversity’s second innings, and runs cam e so slowly that the outstanding wiekets only added 101 in two hours and a half. Yorkshire had 179 to get to wio, and thanks to some vigorous hit ing by Mr. Sellers and Tunnicliffe, who with some luck put on 70 for the third wicket, a hundred was up with two batsm en out. Excepting Mounsey, tHough, none of the later batsmen dia anyihing. and Cambridge won a well-deEfr/ed victory by 59, runs. Their success was m ainly due to the effective slow bowling of Mr. W ells, fle took, ia all, six wickets at a cost of just six runs apiece. C ambridge U n iversity . First Innings. Mr. F. S.
