A c c o r d in g to a Reuter’s telegram from Melbourne under date of Jan. 12, the following names are given as those of the Australian team which is to visit England next summer: J. McC. Blackham, W. Bruce, G. H. S. Trott, H. Trumble, B. McLeod, and H. Graham, of Victoria; G. Giffen, W. F. Giffen, J. J. Lyons, and A. H. Jarvis, of South Australia ; C. T. B. Turner, A. 0. Bannerman, and S. E. Gregory, of New South Wales. T h e information cabled is doubtless correct, and, indeed, it would appear to be presumption to question its reliability. At the same time it would seem as if the Selection Committee in Australia had moved much more quickly than has hitherto been their wont, for the return match between Victoria and New South Wales, which has usually been played before the final choice has been made, is not down to begin till Saturday next. The last intelligence which has reached me from a responsible source was despatched on Dec. 18, and that led me to expect that the last two or three places would not be filled up till the end of this month. T h e absence of W . L. Murdoch’s name from the list which has been sent would seem to justify some little doubt as to the implicit acceptance of the news sent by cable. That there is diversity of opinion in Australian cricket circles as to the advisability of Murdoch’s inclusion there can be no doubt, Still, the absence of any information on this particular point would seem to warrant the belief that the information received may be modified by subsequent communica tions. A c o r r e s p o n d e n t in Calcutta sends two rather good cricketing eccentricities which occurred on the Calcutta Cricket Ground lately, in a match C.C.C. v. St. Paul’s School (Darjeeling). A Tommy of the Buffs, who was on the ground, was asked to umpire, and in the course of the game point and wicket-keep almost simul taneously appealed for a run out. The Tommy, talking about it after the bats man retired, explained the matter to one of the fieldsmen in the following words :— “ When p in t’pealed he was out, so X gave ’im out, but when wicket-keep 'pealed he was in. If pint hadn’ t pealed fust, I ’d ’ ave given ’im in.” T h e other was in the same match, when he gave a man “ not out ” on an appeal for l.b.w., He was explaining it to me after tlio match and said:— “ Vou know, sir, I always gives a man a fair chance I wasn’t very sure whether he was in or out, but I didn't know them other chaps, so I jiivc s ’ im in.” S t il l another illustrated paper! The announcement, though, this time is of particular interest to C r ic k e t readers, as the latest candidate will deal extensively with the King of Games, that is to say, in the season, of course. The Sketch is the title of the new comer, and a suffi ciently comprehensive one it is for all purposes. The Sketch is to be a six penny illustrated weekly. It will be edited by Mr. Clement Shorter, and pub lished at the office of the Illustrated News. The intention is to make a great feature of sport and the drama. I t will be good news to cricketers to know that the appeal of the Executive Committee formed for the purpose of acquiring the freehold of Fenner’s ground, at Cambridge, has met with a liberal response. The application for funds, indeed, has been so successful that the committee have formally accepted the offer of Caius College to sell the cricket ground for the sum of twelve thousand pounds. The hearty way in which Cam bridge men, young aud old, have com bined to preserve Fenner’s for the use of the University in perpetuity is well
