SECOND MATCH—v. WARW ICKSHIRE. The Australian team m ade amends to some extent for their com parative failure against Lord Sheffield’s Eleven, in their opening match, by their perform ance against W arwickshire, at Birming ham, at the end of last week. The County, it is true, had just before col apsed badly at the Ovat, and been decisively I eaten by far from the full strength o f Suriey. Still, the all-round cricket of the Warwickshire eleven is under any circum stances aboYe mediocrity, and the side are ct pable, with a little luck, of rendering a good account of themselves. In the present instance, though they were fortunate enou&h to win the toss, they began badly, losing Quaife without a run. Mr. Hill and Diver were ihe first to make a stand and they put on fifty - four runs in forty minutes by excellent cricket. Messrs. D ocker and Bain- bridge, too, hit freely, but after their departure the tatting broke down, and the innings, wh;ch had lasted tw o hours and a half, after all only r>ached a total of 159. Docker’s forty was the highest score, and at tim es his hitting was very vigorous. Georgd Giffen, during the latter part of the innings, bowled with marked success, and his analysis for the innings showed seven wickets at a cost of sixty runs. The Australians, who had just over two hours for batting on Thursday night, in that tim e scored 106 with only four batsm en out. Though at the outset Lyons had to play with som e care, when he settled down he hit with all his wonted brilliance, and his 71, out of 93, were made in just the same number of minutes. On his retirem ent Trott and Graham showed excellent cricket, and the latter on Friday morning played up to his form of the previous day. He gave no chance during the hour and twenty minutes he was in, and his batting fully confirmed the promise of the first m atch, w ith good defence and plenty of hit all round the wicket. Later on,though, the style of the batting suffered by contrast w ilh what had pre ceded. M cLeod and W alter Giffen, though, made a stand, and the latter was not out when the last wicket fell. In a m inority o f 129 Warwick shire entered upon their second inning3. George Giffen and Coningham again shared the Australian bowling, and they met with such success that the total was only 35 when the fifth wicket fell. Quaife, who had gone in first, however, derived useful assistance from the tail. Lilley and he scored very fast, so fast that 48 were added in twenty-five minutes. After Lilley’s retirement-, Shilton stayed with Quaife till the score was 112, when the latter was caught for an exceedingly well played56. Pallett too gave some trouble, and he was still in when the innings closed for 153. George Giffcn was again the m ost successful bowler. His six w ickets cost 8i iuns, and his record for the m atch showed thirteen wickets at a cost of less than eleven runs apiece. At the finish the Australians had i8 to get to win, and less than twelve overs proved sufficient for the task. The result consequently was in their favour w ith ten wickets to spare. W arw ickshire .
