Cricket 1893
124 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. MAT 11, 1898 M.C.C. & G. v. NOTTS. After having the worst o f the opening day’s play, M.C.C. won this m atch at Lord’s on Thurs day with 37 runs to spare. Notts, w ho had an ad vantage o f 58 runs on the one innings played on, W ednesday, began so w ell on the follow ing m orn ing that six good wickets o f M.C.C. were dismissed for only 56 runs. An easy win for Notts then seemed to be the m ost likely solution of the game. As it was, the tail altered the whole aspect of the m atch. Chatterton and Pougher were the first to offer any real resistance to the bow ling of Atte well and Mee. Chatterton in particular showed adm irable cricket, and his 47, the result of an hour and three-quarters’ batting, was free from a real mistake. Mr. H ornsby and Heam e, too, gave the Notts bowlers great trouble, and their partner ship for the ninth wicket realised 52 runs. W ith 327 to win, for the fourth innings, Notts appeared to have an excellent chance. Barnes’ injured hand, however, com pelled them to bat one short, and, in addition, things went so badly for them that four o f the best batsm en were out for only 35 runs. Some excellent cricket by Mr. W right and D aft raised the hopes of the Notts men materially. Both played with great judgm ent on a wicket that had worn considerably, and while they were toge ther the County had a look in. After adding 40, however, they were separated, and then the end soon came, Attewell, Shacklock, Mee, and Sher win only adding seven between them. Attewell and H eam e, as will be seen, both bowled with great success. The form er’s figures were the better, and his record of eleven wickets for 109 runs was an excellent perform ance. M.C.C. & G.
