Cricket 1893
MAY 11, 1893 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 115 M C.C. & G. v. YORKSH IRE. The Yorkshire Elieven opened the season well at Lord’s this week with a victory over M.C.C. andG. on Tuesday. Their success was the more credit able as they were opposed by a fairly strong side, whilst they themselves were under the disad vantage o f being without Lord Hawke, Mr. Jack son, Mr. E. Smith, and Peel. The ball from the first got up rather dangerously at times, and the bowlers had so m uch the best of the play on M onday that twenty-three wickets only realised an average of 13 runs. The Yorkshirem en had an advantage of 26 runs on the first innings, a result due chiefly to the good batting of Wainwright, w ho made 59 out of 90 runs while he was in, and the effective bowling of Hirst. The latter’s fast bowling was very successful, and he took six wickets for 25 runs, a fine perform ance. York shire, who had lost three wickets in their second innings on M onday night for 27 runs, added 75 on Tuesday m orning before the last wicket fell. The honours in the batting this tim e rested chiefly with W ardall, whose 33 was an innings of great merit as well as of value. Although the batsm en had not found the wicket very m uch to their liking, still it was thought M.C.C. would make the 129 wanted to win. The vigorous hitting of Flowers, too, seemed to plkce the result beyond a doubt. In the forty-five m inutes before luncheon 82 were scored for the loss o f only three wickets, and with Flowers still in .' After the hundred appeared, however, the gam e underwent a sur prising change. Hirst again got thoroughly on to the spot, and in twenty-five balls he dismissed five batsm en for only two runs. In less than half-an- hour the last six wickets fell for an addition of 29 runs, so that Yorkshire were left with a thoroughly well deserved victory by 27 runs. Hirst’s bowling was decidedly the feature of the m atch. In the m atch altogether he took twelve Marylebone wickets at a cost of only four runs a-piece. The Yorkshire Eleven included two new players, Squires, a slow left handed bowler w ho was suc cessful against the Notts Colts last week, and Luther W hitehead o f Harrogate. Y orkshire .
