102 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. MAY 4, 1893 MARYLEBONE CLUB. The anniversary meeting of tho M.C.C. was held at Lord’s yesterday, retiring president Mr. W . E . Denison in the chair. The report, o f which the following are the chief features, was adopted :— Owing to the increasing demand for reserved seats at the Universities and Eton and Harrow matches the committee suggest that in the interest of the present members it is desirable to restrict the issue af reserved seats for members’ friends to existing members, includ ing those elected or to be elected this year. The attention of the committee having been again called to the practice which still obtains with certain batsmen of obstructing the ball with their legs without attempting to use the bat, they desire to circulate the resolution which was unanimously adopted by the general meeting in 1888, as follows :— “ That the practice of deliberately defend ing the wicket with the person, instead of the hat, is contrary to the spirit of the game, and inconsistent with strict fairness, and the M-C.C. will discountenance and prevent this practice by every means in their power.” Mr. W. E. Denison, Mr. C. E. Farmer, Sir A. W. L. Hemming, and Mr. W. H. Patterson have been duly nominated to fill the vacancies on the committee caused by the retirement in rotation of the Duke of Buccleuch, Lord Hawke, Mr. A. W Ridley, and Mr. J. fchuter. The meeting was then made special to con sider the recommendation of the committee to alter Rule 9 of the club as follows: “ The committee may elect 160 candidates in each year; of this number 80 may be brought forward out of their regular turn on account of their cricketing qualifications, and their expressed desire to play for the club.” “ Not more than 14 candidates shall be put up at any ballot, unless there has been a quorum of the committee at the previous ballot, when the lists for both elections fehall be brought forward together. The proportion of crioketing to ordinary candidates at any ballot shall be at the discretion of the committee. The remainder of the rule as at present .'* The recommendation was adopted. The report stated that the clnb consists now of 3851 members, of whom 3400 have paid. There are 217 life members and 234 on the abroad list. Last season 151 matches were played, o f which 87 were won, 33 drawn, and 29 lost. There were also two ties. WH ITG IFT WANDERERS. F irst XI. May 20—Sutton, v. Sutton May 22—Catford Bridge, v.
