Cricket 1892
76 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, APRIL 21, 1892 Turner, who is now qualified by resi dence. The W ar w ick sh ik e eleven, who will have the advantage of Mr. H. W. Bainbridge’s experience as captain, will have an addition this year in the person of Major, of Sussex, who is now qualified. Besides a fairly good list of County matches the members of the War wickshire C.C. will have the attraction of a fixture between North and South on June 30th and two following days. O f the other Counties we have little information. Bedfordshire, Devonshire, Lincolnshire, Northumberland, Oxford shire, and Wiltshire are all in evidence. Cambridgeshire, which could hold its own with the best some thirty years ago, has just revived the County Club with apparently every chance of success. O f the Universities, Cambridge seems to have all the best of the prospects for this year. Though it certainly loses two giants in Woods and McGregor, io has the nucleus of a strong side in Jackson the Captain, Hill, Douglas, Streatfeild, Jephson, Weigall, and Wells. Nor is the outlook for the remaining places unpromising, with such players as N. C. Cooper, who played up to the University match last year, W . Maitin Scott, and E. O. Crawford among the Seniors, and likely Freshmen such as Pope and Bevington of Harrow, Norman of Eton, Whitling of Rugby, Latham of Malvern, and others in reserve. A. O. Jones of Bedford School, too, proved himself to be above the average of the Notts Colts as a batsman this week. L. C. Palairet will Captain the Oxford Eleven, who will miss such an excellent all-round cricketer as E . Smith greatly. The most promising Freshmen w’ould appear to be C. B. Fry of Repton, W . S. Case of Winchester, and A. W. F. Butty, who did well both with bat and ball for Sher borne last year. As yet Public School Cricket is some thing of an unknown quantity. But as we hope to give next week a sketch of the prospects at the various Schools, it will be well to reserve our remarks on this subject till then. The more important fixtures will be found in the following list. MAY. 2—Cam> ridge, Freshmen’s Match 2—Oxford, Seniors’ Match 4—Lord’s. M.C.C.
