Cricket 1892

APBIL 14, 3892 CRICKET: A "WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 59 CR ICKET IN F IJ I. SUVA v. NAVUA AND EEWA. Cricket, which has been at a low ebb in Fiji now for some year3 past, has taken a fresh, and it is hoped a permanent lease of life since the Albert Park, Suva (the present capital of the Colony), ha3 been ploughed up and relaid, and the Pavilion restored during the previous year. By dint of hard work the ground was got ready in time for the Easter holidays, and the resuscitated Suva Cricket Club opened the season on Easter Saturday last with a match against a combined team from Navua and Rewa, in the presence of a large number of visitors and ladies, to whom the two new lawn tennis courts proved a great attraction. Unfortunately the weather, which had at first been beautifully fine, became stormy later on, and finally put a stop to both cricket and lawn tennis. The Suva C.C., after having disposed of the combined team for the small total of 43, owing to the good bowling of Groom and Caldwell, had however time to gain a comparatively easy victory over their opponents, a result mainly attributable to the determined hitting of Swann, and thus opened their new career with a very creditable win. The Suva C.C., after a month or two of practice matches-amongst its members such as Married v. Single, First Eleven v. Next Eighteen, Over Thirty v. Under Thirty, etc , was afforded a good opportunity of testing its strength against a foreign opponent by the arrival of H.M.S. “ Cordelia,” a ship which bears a very good crioket reputation for its size. The first match was played on the new ground at the Albert Park on May 23rd, when the visitors, winning the toss, made a capital start, Lieut. Woollcombe, R.N.. playing a par ticularly good innings. This good start however was not kept up, and the wickets at the end fell rapidly to Mr. Groom’s bowling, the total amounting to 106. On Suva going to the wicket after a sharp shower, which was all in favour of the batsmen, with only a little over an hour to get the runs in, they scored rapidly, and just on the very stroke of time managed to knock off the runs, Mr. Udal carrying out his bat for a well-hit innings of 66,' the club thus winning with only four wickets down. C O R D E L IA (retu rn ) On returning from Tonga, H .M .S. “ Cordelia ” was most anxious to avenge its form er defeat by the Suva Club, and a return match took place at the Albert Park on June 13th,which endede venm ore disastrously for the ship than before, for the “ Cordelia ” men were quite unable to cope with the excellent bowling of Groom and Caldwell, who bowled unchanged throughout both innings. In the absence, too,of their best bowlerthrough illness, the “ Cordelia ” was unable to prevent its opponents m aking the m ost of the good start made by Collins and A. Joske, and gaining an easy victory by an innings and 86 run3. The fielding of the Club w&i very good, no “ extras ” being allowed in either innings. H.M.S. C ordelia . First Innings. Second Innings. Advantage was taken of H.M.S. “ Cordelia ” being at Suva to test the strength of the old country against the colonists resident in Fiji, and a strong contingent being furnished from the ship, a very pleasant match (twelve a side), on June 20th, resulted in a win for E n g land on the first innings. It was a bowlers’ match throughout; Collins, for the residents, obtaining nine wickets for 38 runs, and E ’ Thomas of H.M.S. “ Cordelia” taking seven wickets for the splendid average of only one run a piece. It is much to be regretted that the “ Cordelia ” had been deprived, through illness, of the services of this promising young bowler in its two matches against the Suva Club. E n g la n d . On July 11th the Civil Service opposed Suva. Although the former (playing one short) were in a minority on the first innings, Collins taking six of their wickets for only 18 runs, yet mainly owing to the free hitting of Udal and Allardyce and the steadier play of Groom in the second innings, they managed to pull off the match by the handsome majority of 55 runs.
