APR IL 14, 1892 CBICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. 66 Watt, who got his wicket, in the same over bowled Lohmann, who, like his county com rade, had failed on the unlucky number 13. Stoddart went in later than usual at this critical juncture, and for the first time in the innings the scoring was lively. The Middlesex amateur hit like fury, and showed an especial liking for Kendall’s leg breaks, many of which he despatched to the chains, despite the fine efforts of the outfield. At 15 he was let off in the long field, but that was the only chance he gave. Philipson, who had come to Hobart overland, shaped stylishly for 27, and made some tine drives all round the wicket before he was caught. The last three wickets fell rapidly, and Stoddart was left not out with 81 opposite his name. His innings was a grand one, and lasted under an hour and a half. H e made twice as many runs as were got at the other end while he was at the wickets, and converted what was an even game into a pretty thing for the Englishmen. Throughout the Tasmanians fielded grandly. Kendall, as his figures show, obtained a splendid average. The Tasmanians went to the wickets, and in a quarter of an hour Lohmann got rid of two of them for 6. Having to follow on, in a minority of 177, the Eighteen made a better show, chiefly through the good cricket of Burn the captain, and Savigny. The rest, however, could do nothing with the bowling of Lohmann, who in the match took twenty- five wickets for 103 runs. The English team won by an innings and 39 runs. The English team, who won the to’ps, after making 344, for four wickets, on the first day, had increased thtir total to 490. for the loss of nine batsmen (Mr. Stoddart 134, Peel 83, Dr. Grace 58, and Read 57) when rain stopped play on the second afternoon. W ith the addition of nine runs the innings closed on the following day. The wicket was in favour of the bowlers, when the Austra ians went in, and as they were dismissed for 103 and 169 the English team had an easy victory by an innings and 500 runs. Briggs in the match altogether took twelve wickets for 136 runs. BEAUMONT CLUB. April 30—Home, Captain’s v. Secretary’s Team May 7—Home, v. Lower Clapton May 7—Walthamstow, v. Lower Clapton 2nd XI.
