Cricket 1892

474 CK1CKET: A WEEKLY RECOBD OF THE GAME. OCT. 27, 1892 THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN 1892. Continued from C r ic k e t o f September 22. C h e lt e n h a m had an unsuccessful season. The only one of the eleven matches which resulted favourably was that against the Old Boys. The other ten were drawn and lost in equal proportions. The worst reflection in connection with the summer’ s cricket is that both the School matches (Clifton and Marl borough) were lost. Champain, whose elder brother played for Gloucestershire some few years ago, had the best batting average. He is spoken of as a highly promising youngster. U p p in g h a m had a good team this year, the batting in particular being strong throughout. The best in this department was Hemingway with the fine average of 57. He made 164 v. Haileybury, 107 v. Surbiton, and other fine scores. Wilson, who got 120 not out v. Surbiton, is a good all-round man. The bowling, however, was not quite so strong. In the field the eleven were very smart, tbe best being Hemingway, Whitwell, and Watson: Cowan, though young, is a smart wicket-keeper. On the whole the M a r lb o r o u g h eleven had apretty good season, the want of success at the beginning being owing to the time it took the eleven to settle down. Both the school matches were won, that against Cheltenham by seven wickets, and against Rugby by an inn ings and 78 runs. At Cheltenham, Knight and Marley were principally responsible for the result, as Knight made 95 and Marley 53, and the latter took most of the wickets. At Lord’s Creed and Mortimer fully justified their repu tation by scores of 211 and 106 respectively, both superb displays of batting. Marley and Jowitt once more carried off the bowling honours. Marley made an excellent captain, and his untiring energy was amply repaid at Cheltenham and Lord’s. Of the nine matches four were won, one drawn, and four lost. Last season at R u g b y can only be described as disastrous. In all twelve matches were played, of whioh the eleven won two, drew two, and lost eight. They beat the Old Rugbeians and Newbold Revel, drew against Balliol, Oxford, and M.C.C., and lost to New, Trinity, Rugby C.C., Free Foresters, Butter flies, Whalley Range, and W. G. Michell’ s XI. at Marlborough. The great weakness was in the bowling, as the figures will prove. The fielding was nearly always smart, and really excellent at Lord’s right through Marl borough’s long innings. A good wicket keeper was sadly wanted. Slater and Sample worked hard as bowlers, and as the latter is only fifteen, a great deal may reasonably be expected of him in the future. G. M. Thompson, who will captain the eleven next year, was unable to play owing to ill-health, and his loss was severely felt, as he is a good all-round player. Dowson, Christopherson, and A. E. Slater all played excellently at Lord’s, and as ten of the team will be back next summer, a good eleven may be expected, Despite the fact that he only made one run in the two innings at Lord’s, P. F. Warner, the captain, was at the top of the batting averages. A. E. Slater, who is a good steady bat, was second. Of the fourteen matches played by W i n c h e s t e r during the season, half were left drawn ; of the remainder three (those against the Green Jackets, New College, and Eton) were won, and four (against the old Wykehamists, FreeJForesters, M.C.C.,and the return against the Green Jackets) were lost. The total number of runs scored by the School was 2,840 for 133 completed innings, against 2,677 made by their opponents, and the eleven was without doubt fully up to the level of the Winchester Elevens of the last two years. Four bats had to do most of the work, and the bowling was sound rather than brilliant. The eleven, however, were well to gether, playing excellent cricket throughout, and had in reality a most successful season. J. R. Mason, the hero of the last Eton match, is captain for 1893. Inns.
