Cricket 1892
It will bo remembered that by brilliant victories in their Indian tour last year the Parsee cricketers established their claim to tbe cricket championship in India. They had not, however, met a thoroughly representative European team in Pombav, and it Was therefore au^. gested that such a representative team should play tha Parsees so as to settle the question of championship. 11.15, Lord Harris, the Governcr. true to his sportsmanlike in stincts, favoured the suggestion, and two matches were arranged to le played this year. The first, of tl.eao, which came off on August 25, had t^j^ibandoned after oneday’a play owin .4 to heavy rainon th^HWWl day. During the first day'a play the Europeans a-nra^ runs, whilst their opponents knocked lip54 for the loss of four wickets. Better weather allowed the rei.orn match to t;e ployed out. The two teams met o i the Poona Gymkhana Ground, on September 19 and the two following days, and a more exciting contest was never seen before by the spectators, among whom was Lord Harris. The Europeins winning the toss went in first and mads 108 runs, to which their opponents replied with 101 runs. In their second venture tho former managed to put together only 79runs, leaving the Parsees 87 runs to make to win, a task which was by no means easy considering the state of the wicket, which heavy ahowers had rendered *!ow and treacherous. It was, however, accomplished for the loss ef seven wickets, the Parsees thus winning a most creditable victory, a»d establishing beyond ques tion their title to the ohampionship in Indian cricket. After these results we may venture to say that a very warm reception at the hands of the redoubtable Parsees awaits Lord Hawke's team, which sails on Friday next, the 14th inst.
