He is one of the most promising cricketers in Ireland, being a fine free bat, a steady bowler and a good fielder. Montifort Gavin was educated at Clongowes Wood College, and played for the school eleven. He entered Trinity College and got his colours in his freshman year. After leav ing college he was gazetted to the Fifteenth Lancers. He is a member of the Phcenix Cricket Club, and in 1889 made 159, not out, against the Grange Cricket Club, Scotland, when runs were badly wanted. He played for the Gentlemen of Ireland last season and in 1890. He is a very good wicket-keeper, a thoroughly sound batter and an excellent fielder. W. Vint was educated at Denmark Hill, London, and played for his school eleven, and had the best batting average prior to 1880. He next played for the North of Ireland Cricket Club, and in 1880 had the best batting average, several times reaching the century. From ’81 to ’87 he lived in Australia and played for the Melbourne and Bohemian Cricket Clubs, with an average of 39, making that season 132, 164 and 146 (not out.) He played for the Colony of Victoria v. South Australia in the inter-colonial matches for his wicket-keeping. He has for two years played for the Gentlemen of Ireland. He is a first-class wicket-keeper and a sound bat. F. F. Rilkelly was educated at Downside College, and played for the school eleven for five years. He joined the Phoenix Cricket Club in 1888, where he distinguished himself by his hitting powers. This season he made 10 * for Phcenix v. Garrison. He played for the Gentlemen of Ireland v. I Zingari this sea'son. He is an extraordinarily fast scorer, a magnificent fielder aud a good fast bowler. E. R. Thompson was educated at Hampstead Heath, London, and played for the school eleven. He entered Dublin University in ’88 and has played for ihe eleven for four years. In 1889 he made 45 for the University v. Shrewsbury’s North of England Eleven. He played for the Gentlemen of Ireland this season. He is a first-class batsman and a very brilliant fielder. ■Hr-F. Penny was educated at Dublin University, and played for the eleven in his first year. He has played for the Gentlemen of Ireland for the last three years, and has bowled with remarkable success. He is a slow right-hand bowler with big off break, and varies his pace with great judgment, and on a slow wicket he has few superiors in this line. He is a useful left-hand bat and a good fielder. Captain David Rutledge, the manager of the Irish team, was educated at South-Eastern College, Ramsgate, and played for the eleven. He is a captain in the Third Connaught Rangers. He is a Mayo man and is the mainstay of the County Cricket Club. He is a fine left-hand bat, a useful change bowler and a brilliant fielder, NORTHBROOK CLUB.
