Cricket 1892
SEPT, 8, 1892 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 415 SUSSEX v. SOMERSETSHIRE. Sussex brought a very disappointing season to a close amid very dreary surroundings at Brighton on Saturday last. Rain interfered bo much with the opening stage of the game on Thursday that the play only lasted in all thirty-five minutes. Even then the cricket had to be'played in two instalments, twenty minutes before lunch and a quarter of an hour afterwards. The first period resulted in the dismissal of Palairet, who was out without scoring, hitting a ball hard on to the wicket keeper, who caught it on the return. Challen stayed while his captain hit fearlessly, and when the game was stopped Hewett had made 38 out of the 50 got for the loss of Palairet’s wicket. On Friday rain prevented the deli very of a ball, and on Saturday after the game had only occupied five minutes another heavy shower caused a further interruption. Later on the umpires reported the wicket to be unfit for real cricket, and the match was therefore abandoned. Hewett had mean while on Saturday added three fours to his account, so that the match was ultimately drawn with 62 to Somersetshire’s credit at the cost of one wickefc. S o m e r s e t s h ir e .
