Cricket 1892
AUG. 25, 1892. CRIOKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 3 9 1 SOMERSETSHIRE v. M IDDLESEX. Som ersetshire have advanced another step this week in the competition for the premiership of County Cricket. Their victory over Middlesex at Taunton, on Tuesday, places them, in fact, third to Surrey and Notts, with an excellent chance of retaining the third position till the end. In their last match they were able to place their full strength in the field, while Middlesex on the other hand were w ithout Messrs. Nepean, Jardine, and Stanley Scott. The choice of innings fell to Somerset, and though the wicket was hardly as true as usual at Taunton they made a fairly good show. At lunch tim e on Tuesday the total was 127 for the loss of only four batsmen, and there seemed every prospect of a good score. As it was, on the resumption Phillips and Rawlin bowled with great success, and the six re maining wickets were quickly disposed of, having only added 33 runs. The chief feature of the in nings was the stand by Messrs. Hedley and New ton, who added 63 for the fourth wicket. Mr. Hedley m ade 58 out of 93 in an hour and twenty minutes, and there was no chance to be urged to his discredit. Phillips was the m ost successful of the M iddlesex bowlers. His six wickets only cost 40 runs, and his last six overs dismissed five batsm en for only 15 runs. Any idea of a long score for Middlesex was soon dispelled, though Messrs. W ebbe and Stoddart put on 21 for the first wicket. Some vigorous hitting by Messrs. Henery and Stoddart gave a little relief to the game, and the pair addded 36 in twenty minutes. No one else, however, except Phillips, who ultim ately carried out his bat for 31, offered any great resistance to Tyler and Mr. fledley, and when the tenth wicket fell Middlesex were 37 behind. G oing in again, Somer setshire had twenty minutes left for batting, and in that time made 22 runsat the cost of Mr. Hewett’s wicket. On Tuesday morning, Messrs. Challen and Palairet were seen to advantage, and both scored so fast that when the latter was caught after fifty minutes. 75 had been added. Mr. lledley again played well, and he saw Messrs Challen and Newton out. Mr. Challen was in an hour and a half for his 72, and his batting was quite equal to any shown in the match. Mr. Hedley was fifthout, at 164,and as the remaining batsmen between them scored fifty, the innings closed at 214. Left with 255 to win, Middlesex did not begin auspiciously, losing both Messrs. W ebbe and Stoddart for 21. Messrs. Henery and O’Brien made the game lively while they were together, and i8 had been added in a quarter of an hour, when the former fell to a good catch in the slipr. On Mr. Hene y’s dismissal, Mr. W oods resumed bowling and then for a time the game went badly for Middlesex, Mr. Ford, Mr. Collins and Rawlin being all got rid of for an addition of only six runs. Mr. MacGregor, however, stayed while Mr. O’Brien hit and the total had been increased by 34 when the latter was well caught at third man. He had made 70 out of 108 runs in just over an hour and a h ilf, w ith only one chance, when he had got sixty. In his 70 were two hitsjout of the ground for s x. Messrs Lucas and MacGregor made another stand, and 27 were added before the former waa caught at the wicket. Rain was falling slightly when Hearne, the last man, cam e in, and after he had knocked up 15 he was bowled, when the match was over, Somersetshire having won by 70 runs. N ichols’ bowling at the finish had much to do with the result. His five wickets only cost 28 runs. Mr. W . B. Collins made his first appearance for Middlesex in this match. The proceeds of the m atch have been given to A. J. Fothergill, who did good service for Somersetshire for some years. S om ersetsh ire . First Innings. Mr. H. T.
