YORKSHIRE. Some very even cricket marked the course of the return m atch between these Counties, commenced on the Gloucestershire Cricket Ground at Biistol on Monday. Though L o ri Hawke was at sent from the Yorkshire Eleven, the side was strengthened by the reappearance of the Cambridge Captain, Mr. F. S. Jackson. Another change was also made in the eleven which met Kent at Maidstone last week, by the substitution of Ellis of Sheffield for Hirst. Mr. Smith, who acted as CapUin o f the Yorkshire Eleven, was for tunate enough to win tho toss, and Gloucester shire were three hours and fifty minutes in the field for a total of 258. Messrs. Smith and Jack son set Yorkshire a good example by makiDg forty for the first wicket. The latter saw four bats men retire before he was out. His innings extended over two hours and a quarter, and his 76 was a highly creditable display of free and confident batting without an actual m is take. Later on Tunnicliffe and Brown made the game lively, and their partnership, which produced 58 runs, was productive o f some vigorous cricket. Mr. W. G. Grace was the m ost successful bowler during Yorkshire’s long innings. His five wickets cost 82 runs. Glouces tershire had just under an hour’s batting on Monday evening, and in that time made 65 for the loss of Mr. Radcliffe’s wic ket. On Tuesday m orn ing, Messrs. E. M. Grace and Page scored freely for a time, till Mr. Smith went on and got rid of both batsmen in his first over. Painter soon followed, but, in spite o f two interruptions from rain, Messrs. W. G. Grace and Rice retained pos session until rain stoped play for the day, having added 55 since the last wicket. As it dried yester day under the influence of a bright sun, the wicket was rather difficult, and the batsmen had to play up hard for their runs. Gloucestershire, who had overnight scored 159 for the loss of four bats men, com pleted their innings for 240, the last six batsmen thus adding 81 runs. Of these W .G. and Capt. Luard put on 53 in 50 minutes, and the latter’s free hitting was the best feature of the batting yesterday morning. W ith a lead of 18 runs, Yorkshire began their second innings just before lunch, and with a drying wicket fared badly at the outset, half the side being out before the total reached 50. Subsequently, however, Ulyett, Tunnicliffe and Brown were all seen to advantage, and the m atch was ultimately drawn, Yorkshire being 192 runs on with one wicket to fall. Y o r k sh ir e .
