During the latter part of the innings he batted with more freedom than usual, and his tim ing and placing were up to his very best standard. This is, we may add, Shrewsbury’s fifth hundred in first-clasa m atches this season. Gunn helped Shrewsbury to add 166 for the second wicket, and though he gave a chance to »hort-8lip at 57, it was a display well worthy of his reputation. Barnes mado 65 out o f 1U0 in a hour and a half, but he ought to have been caught twice, the first tim e when he had made 37. Heavy rain prevented a start until after half past one o’clock on Tuesday, aud then the tail » f Notts peiform ed so creditably that 142 iuna we:e added before the innings closed. The chief credit of this belonged to D aft and Attewell, who added 77 in an hour. D aft’s b9 waa a creditable display, and Attewell hit well, though he ought to have been caught twice during the letter part of hia inninga. After being in six hours and twenty minutes, Notts were at last out for a big total of 429. It was a fine perform ance, but at the same time, they were greatly indebted to mistakes in the field. After their long outing, Gloucestershire made a poor start, and when pity ceased on Tuesday night four of the best batsm en were out with the score only 52. Mesara. E. M. Grace and Radcliffe both fell in the aecond over to finecatchea at alip. Yeaterday, Roberta and Mr. Ferris were both in for an hour and a half, and their play waa the chief feature of the latter part of the inninga, which closed just before two o ’clock for 146. With three hours and ten minutes for play, and 283 to avert an inninga defeat, Gloucester shire had a very difficult task before them. Still they played up with creditaH e pluck, and thanks chiefly to the free hitting ofj Painter and the good cricket of Mr. W . G. Grace, who carried out hia bat for 43, the game was cirawn with the total 196 for five wickets. N otts . G LOUCESTERSHIRE v. NOTTS. Nottinghamshire and Surrey this season furnish the joint attraction for the Cheltenham Week, w hich commenced on Monday. The wickets on the College Ground have generally borne a good reputation, and the NoMingham- shire eleven utilised their opportunity in winning the toss on Monday, so well, that when stumps were drawn they had m ade 287, at a cost of omy four batsmen. The period of actual play was a little over four hours and a half, so that the rate of acoring this time exceeded sixty an hour. Mr. Dixon waa bowled in tne aecond over but he was the only failure of the day, and Shrewa- bury, Gunn, and Barnea were all Been to marked advantage. Shrewsbury waa not dis- missed until the score was 268. Of these he had Shrewsbury, b W. G. Grace .....................127 Mr. J. A.
