Cricket 1892

AUG. 11, 1892 C R I C K E T : A W E E K L Y E E C O R D O P T H E G A M E . 8 5 3 LEICESTERSH IRE v. SURREY. The Surrey eleven, with the help of a big score on Thursday at Leicester, got such an advantage at the start that Leicestershire had, at the best, only one hope, of averting a defeat. This they failed to realise, as the game was over late on Friday afternoon, with an easy win for Surrey by an innings and 60 runs. Neither County had its full strength, as, while Surrey were without Mr. Shuter, Mr. Streatfeild, and Lockwood, Leicester shire was weakened ty the absence of Messrs. De Trafford, S. R . W right, and Lorrimore. Surrey were in all the first day for 349, the actual duration of their innings being a little over five hours and a quarter. A t one time it looked as if the score would be much larger. The telegraph showed 810 with only four wickets down, but the later bats men made a poor show against the fast bowling of Mr. W right. Henderson, Brockwell, Sharpe, and Mr. Clarke were all dismissed at 347, and the innings closed for 349, Mr. W right bowling the last four wickets without a run off him . Of a total of 319 from the bat, Maurice Read, Baldwin, and Henderson contributed 260. Though neither in nings was faultless Baldwin and Henderson were both seen to great advantage, batting with care and judgment. By far the best performance, though, was that of Maurice Read. For a little over three hours and a half, he played free and attract ive cricket, with only one actual-mistake when he had got 79. In their first innings on Friday m orn ing Leicestershire could do nothing with the fast bowling o f Richardson, and in two hours and a quarter they were all out, with Chapman’s 20 the best of five double figures. Richardson’s bowling was worthy of the highest praise. Although the wicket was in run-getting order he cam e back very quickly. Under such conditions his figures (eight wickets for 34) speak for themselves. Fol lowing on with a heavy sum of 233 against them, thanks to Holland and Warren Leicestershire made a better start. They added sixty-two runs for the second wicket, but after their separation no one else except Pougher and Chapman did much, and the chance of saving the innir gs was never very hopeful. This time Sharpe was the most success ful bowler. His five wickets only cost 32 runs. S u r r e y . Generally high scoring was the result o f this m atch, played at Stockport on Thursday and Fri day last. In the two days 699 runs were made for twenty-four wickets, which gives an average of over 29 runs. Brown and Smith of Cheshire were the highest run-getters, and the latter also bowled well, taking seven Warwickshire wickets for 102 runs. Brown’s hitting was very vigorous. His 94, which were got in just under an hour and a half, included two sixes. At the finish Warwickshire were 118 on with six wickets to fall. W arw ick sh ire.—First Innings. Mr. H. W.
