Cricket 1892
AUG. 4, 1892. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THS GAME. 843 wicket that had been affected by the wet early on Tuesday, made a plucky fight. Mr. Ernest j Smith was in an hour and a half for an admirable! score of 57, made without anything like a fault. Though eight other members of the Yorkshire Eleven got double figures; Still the best contribution to the aggregate of 277 was Tunnicliffe’s 32 not out. Briggs’ bowling was ',the chief cause of the generally small figures. He took eight of the ten wickets at a cost of 14 runs apiece. In the follow-on Lord Hawke and Tunnicliffe made an excellent start, and though there was an interval often minutes from rain, 66 were put on before the former, who had played well for his 36, was bowled. Wardall had come in with avery bad light, and play had to be suspended at 6.20 from ! this cause with the score 74 for one wicket. Yesterday Wardall was soon dismissed, and though Tunnicliffe raised his score to 50, half the wickets were down for 119. The remainder of the innings produced no feature of interestj and Yorkshire were in the end beaten by an innings and 83 runs. Mr. F. S. Jackson, it may be added, was still un able to play owing to an injured hand, and the loss of his all round cricket was severely felt by Yorkshire. L a n c a s h ir e . F. With more than one interruption from rain, this match, begun at Leicester on Monday, ended yesterday in a win for the home team by nine wickets. Mr. J. A. Turner, who too rarely figures in county matches, was seen to great advantage, and his score of 77 not out for Leicestershire was the highest in the match. Pougher took ten Warwickshire wickets for 97 runs. Nine of the ten wickets in Leicestershire’s first innings fell to Shi ton at a cost of 78 runs. W arwickshire . First Innings. Second Innings. After following on in a minority of 108 Derbyshire closed their second innings with the total 265 for six wickets. They gained nothing by it, however, as at the finish Essex had scored sixty for the loss of one batsman. Mr. Kortright was the most successful bowler. He took eleven Derbyshire wickets at a cost of 116 runs. E ssex .—First InniDgs. Mr. A. P. Lucas, b Mr. H. M. Taberer, b S u gg........................ 51 Davidson .......... 16 Mr. H. G. The Hampshire eleven made a good fight in their return match with Sussex, begun at Southampton on Monday. Though the wicket favoured the bowlers at the outset, Bean and Marlow made 146 for the fir3t wicket of Sassex, and this was the prelude to some generally high run-getting, 996 runs being scored in the three days. In the end Hampshire were beaten bv 54 runs. S ussex . Fir it Innings. Marlow, b Soar.................78 Bean, b Steele .................73 Mr.W. G.
