Cricket 1892

258 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, JUNE 30, 1892 THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. WINCH ESIER COLLEGE v. ETON COLLEGE. The Winchester Eleven were seen to greater ad vantage in their arnual match with Eton, played at Winchester on Friday and Saturday, and won with plenty to ppaie. Winchester winning the toss went in first, and thcuph the wiclet wa* rather slow, made a very satisfactory score of 237. The credit of this success wj s due to one member of the team, .1. R. Mason. Going in first he made 147 out of 233 runs. For this score he wos in three hours, and tbere was l o chance of any kind to detract from a fine display of batting. When Eton went in Mason also proved of gr»at use as a >owler, and his captain lent such valuable assistance later on that the innings closed at 182. On Saturday Winchester ag«in scored well, and thanks to some excellent batting by Mason, Leveson-Gower, Stephens, and Micklem, the total was 261 for the loss of only four batsmen, when the innings was closed. This left Eton with 307 to win, and though Hoare and Pilkington hit well, when the l*st wicket fell they were £4 runs to the bad. Le'eson Gower, the Winchester captain, took eight wickets for 33 runs, Mason the same num- fo 139 run*. Hoare’s five wickets for Eton cost 117 runs. R. H. Mitchell, in the Eton Eleven, is a son of Mr. It. A. H. Mitchell, the old Etonian and Oxford cricketer, now for many years a master at Eton. W in c h e s t e r .— First Innings. J. R.
