Cricket 1892

JUNE 30, 1892. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 2 5 7 THE LONDON CLUBS. G r a n v il l e (Lee) liad three teams again in the field on Saturday last. The first was playing Hampstead at Lee, the other two matches were against Trafalgar at Tottenham, and Panther at Catford. Granville won at Lee, scoring 184 for nine wickets, against Hampstead’ s 153. C. J. M. Godfrey’s 60 for the winners was the feature of the game. At Tottenham, the match (12 a-side) was a draw, the home team scoring 177, and the Granville 91 for only two wickets. For the Trafalgar, S. Robertson scored 46, J. Howard and A. lloss each 40. For the Granville, J. Clarkson (34 not out) and L. Glover (36) were the chief contributors. A. J. Anderson for the Gran ville did a fine piece of bowling, taking four wickets in two overs for no runs. At Catford the Granville lost by 30 runs, scoring 79 to loy. T h e Stoic3’ Sussex tour, concluded on Satur day last, was the most successful the club has ever had. One match, that against Ardingly College, was left unplayed on account of the rain, while of the others three were won in each case with a handsome margin, and two were drawn at a very even stage of £ho game. J. S. Haycraft's batting (average for tho week 67), and J. Westhorp’s bowling (25 wickets for under nine runs each) aud batting (average 48) were the main features of the tour. The team were fortunate in having with them so good a sportsman as Mr. W. H. Mackenzie, who drove them down from town and to the matches on his drag. O n e of the most interesting features of the Hornsey Week, concluded last Saturday, was the re-appearance of the whilom Middlesex bowler, L. H. Bacmeister. Though only strong enough to play twice he scored 23, 29, and 22, besides taking five wickets for 20 against Hampstead, and four wickets for 11 against Old Rugbeians. In the match against Clapham Wanderers, G. H. Swinstead took five wickets for 24 in the first innings, and B. F . Furniss scored 83 in brilliant style. Against M.C.C. & G. H. Collet got four wickets for 17 runs. In this latter match overnight rain had spoiled the wicket altogether for Friday, and M.C.C. winning the toss took the field. Phillips, the Middlesex bowler, was almost unplayable in the first innings aud took six wickets for 12 runs. The result of the week was three wins and two losses, and as one of the latter was by the narrow margin of three runs, the other principally due to the assist ance the wicket gave to a first-class bowler, the club have every reason to be satisfied. T h e Oval was the scene of some fast run- getting on Saturday morning. The fixture between the second elevens of Surrey and Lancashire was over iu suflicient time to allow of the decision of a match between the Ono aud All and St. Mark’s Club. Though the game did not commence till just before four o’clock, 285 runs were scored before 7.15, for the loss of fourteen wickets. The period of actual play was three hours, and St. Mark’s, who had to go in against 135, got the last 15u runs in eighty minutes. D. D r is k e ll, of the Alleyn Club, bowled a successful over in the match against the Oak on Thursday last, on the latter’ s ground. With the first ball of his second over he clean bowled F. Lett. This let in Skipwith, who is a member of both clubs, and j ust for a joke the bowler pitched a lob which the batsman placed in the hands of square leg. The third ball clean bowled George Harrison, who has been scoring very heavily this year, and had then got 72, while to the fourth King was out lbw. The result was a wicket with each of four successive balls. G. H. W indeler , the captain of the Sur biton Club, has been batting witli great success this season. His average up to date is fifty- three per innings. Last Saturdaj*, too, another well known Surrey amateur, C. A. Trouncer, the old Cantab, to wit, was very much iu evidence for Surbiton. The match was against the Marlborough Blues, and he notched 152 out of a total of 275. Though missed more than once, it was a hard hit innings. Sixteen fours and a five were in the number.
