The fixtures between these great rivals under any circumstances attract, considerable inteiest. The exceptionally good form each has recently teen showing, however, lent additional importance to their first matchof the season, begun at Sheffield on Monday. The only drawlack was that while Notts had its best available Bide, Yorkshire could not claim the services of either Lord Hawke, who had not been well, or Messrs fi. Smith and F. S. Jackson. Losing the toss Notts had to field first, and so good was their out cricket that at luncheon time on Monday only sixty-two runs had been made by Yorkshire for Uvo wickets. Rain stopped play after Mr. Sellars and Hall had been difc- misstd.and, on resuming, the last six wickets were dismissed for an addition of 53 tuns. Attewell and Flowers bowled with marked success, and the last half of tie innings only realised 29. Rain delayed the commencement of Notts’ inn ings till after one o’clock on Tuesday, and then the light was very bad. A very inauspicious start was mad -, Hunter snapping Shrewsbury at the wicket in the second over before he had a chance of scoring. 1 he young Cantab, Mr. Jones, however, played such excellent cricket with Gunn that the score was increased to 63 before the amateur was bowled. Gunn, who had played in his test form for 42, was out at 67, and then for a time the bowling of Peel and Wainw/ight proved so effective that five wickets only produced »n addi ion of 2 1 runs. Mr. Dixon and Shacklock added 36 for the ninth wicket, and at the finish bherwin played with such pluck that 21 more were put on, giving Notts a lead of ten runs. With an hour and ten minutes for batting on Tue day, Ulyett and Hall made an excellent start for York shire, scoring 45 before the latter was caught. Attewell however dismissed Ulyett, Mr. Sellars, and Mounsey in succession. At the end of the '’ay, the total was 62 for the loss of four wickets. The heavy thunderstorms of Tuesday night made the grou> d in such a state that no play was possibe yesterday, and ihe match had to ie abandoned. Y ork sh ire. —First Innings.
