Cricket 1892

2 8 2 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, JUNE 23, 1892 LANCASHIRE v. OXFORD UNIVERSITY. Heavy rain interfered with the early part of this match at Manchester, and play was only possible for about two hours and three quarters on Monday. In this time ten. wickets fell for 129, Lancashire after dismissing the University for 120 scoring nine without the loss of a wicket. The game at the outset was slow, and the earlier bats men of Oxford fared so badly that five were out with the total only 46. Some vigorous hitting by Hill, however, gave the game a better appearance. He scored ?8 out of 68 in the hour he was in, and his fiee cricket was decidedly the beet feature of the innings. When play was resumed on Tuesday the wickethad dried considerably, and Lancashire were able to bat under much more favourable conditions. Mr. Brain, the Oxford wicket-keeper, was not well enough to play, and Mr. Jardine kept in his place, the eleven being completed by the addition of Mr. T. A Higson. Eight of the Lan cashire e’even contributed double figures to the total of 251. Ward’s 47 was the best display. Going in first he was second out at 91, of which his sh ire was 47, an inni gs without a mistake. Towards the end Yates hit with great freedom and carried out his bat, though he ought to have been caught twice. Going in a second time in a minority of 181, Oxford made a very disippoint- ing show, having lost four wickets for 48 runs wnen rain stopped play for the day. Another downfall of rain delayed the resumption till after half-past twelve o'clock yesterday, and then the University were able to do little against the Lancashire bowling on the slow ground. Hill agii’t played well for his 16, and Wood added a useful ,27. Otherwise there was little of interest, and before luncheon Lancashire had won by an innings and 22 runs. Mr. Benton played for Lancashire for the first time in this match. Owing to a strain Watson stood down, and his place in the Lancashire Eleven was taken by Ellis of Pieston.
