Though the start at the Oval on Thursday seemed to suggest anything but a very favourable result, the Surrey eleven won their first important inter-county match of the season with p enty in hand. Neither side was in full strength, as while Surrey was without Maurice Read and Wood, the Oxford captain, as well as Messrs. V. T. Hill, W. N. Roe, and J. B. Challen were unable to help Somersetshire. Heavy rain in the early morning and forenoon made it doubtful whether there would be any play on Thursday. As it was, however, the downpour ceased before one o’clock, and as the Surrey ground dries very quickly, a commencement was made at two o’clock, luncheon having been disposed of earlier than usual. Mr. Shuter’s luck in tossing did not desert him and Surrey decided to bat first. The wicket at the outset played rather queerly, and there was con sternation among Surrey’s supporters when Abelj Lohmann, Mr. Read, and Lockwood were all out with the score only 8. Mr. Shuter after making 12 runs was bowled, and half the side were out for .20 runs. Henderson and Mr. Key were the first to offer any resistance, and their stand saved the side from a collapse. After helping to add 33, Henderson was caught at the wicket for an invaluable score of 20, which was also the amount of Mr. Key’s contribution. Brockwell subsequently hit with resolution, and thanks to his 30 not out, Surrey after all reached a total of 115. Unlike their opponents, Somersetshire started welJ, and the score was 53 for three wickets when Lockwood went on for Sharpe. The change had a remark able effect, turnimg the whole course of the game. None of the remaining batsmen, in fact, could face Lockwood, and the innings closed for an addition of 26, Lockwood taking five wickets at a cost of exactly 2 runs apiece. With a lead of 36 runs, Surrey had fifty minutes left for batting on Thursday, and in that time thanks to the vigor ous hitting of Lohmann scored 81 for the loss of Brockweli’ s wicket. On ^Friday morning, Lohmann continued to treat the Somersetshire bowling with Bcant courtesy, until he put up a ball from Mr. Woods and was caught at extra mid off. His 78 was an exceptionally good display of free cricket, hla hitting all round being very clean and well-timed. Abel soon followed, caught in the same place at 180. He gave a chanGe in the slips when his score was 47, but otherwise, his 64 was quite up to his best form, though all the 0 her batsmen made runs, the most Interesting cricket was shown by Messrs. Shuter and Key. Mr. Shuter’s 31 included a big square leg hit from Nichols, which pitched just inside the fence. The Surrey innings, which had lasted three hours and fifty minutes, closed for 3 0, so that the rate of run-getting was about 80 an hour. Wanting 337 to win, Somersetshire made an unpromising commencement, losing Hale and Nichols with only 1 scored. Messrs. Hewett and Fowler improved matters considerably by their free hitting, adding fifty runs for the third wicket. The substitution of Abel for Lohmann, however, soon brought tho match to a close. In eight overs the slow bowler secured five wickets at an average cost of just under six runs, and as Mr. T. Robinson was unable to bat owing to an injury, the innings closed for 157. Mr. Fowler’s second innings of 54 was quite one of the best of the match, with good hitting as well as defence. Surrey won by 179 runs. S urrey . First Innings. Second Innings.
