Cricket 1892

JUNE 2, J892 CBICKElf: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. 173 Cooper played the stonewaH game, and after defending his wicket for 75 minutes was run out with only 4 runs to his credit. At one time he was batting for nearly an hour without making a run. The others adopted a freer and more suit able style, and Messrs. Jackson, Hill, and Gay met with some success. Owing to an injury to his bowling hand in stopping a hit of Lord Hawke on the first day, Mr. Bromley Davenport was unable to bat, so that the University were one short. Yorkshire required 135 to win. and by the fine cricket of Lord Hawke, Hall, and Ulyett the runs j weie hit off in two hours for the loss of 3 wickets. Lord Hawke hit in most brilliant fashion and iu twenty-five minutes scored 40 of the first 51 runs. Ulyett assisted Hall to carry the score to 113, when the latter was run out. He batted more freely than is usually the case, and there was no mistake in his 47. Ulyett was caught with the total at 120, but Mounsey and Mr. Frank soon knocked off the runs still wanting, leaving York shire with a very creditable victory. Mr. Bromley Davenport’s bowling was greatly missed by the University at the end of the match. C a m b r id g e U n iv e r s it y . N e x t S ix t e e n . First Innings. Second Innings. S . N. Though there was no great disparity at the end . ®f Monday’s play at Leicester, Leicestershire’s 67 i tail performed so well on the following morning j that a success was assured. The last four 2 i wickets, indeed, added 141, of which number Mr. 2 Joyce, of Guy’s Hospital, contributed 54 in forty i minutes by vigorous hitting. Thanks to the 6 good cricket of Mr. Holden and Wright. Cheshire just managed to avert an innings defeat, and 0 . Leicestershire won yesterday with nine wickets to spare. Neither Captain was able to play, Mr. de Trafford being absent from the Leicestershire and Mr. H. R. Bromley-Davenport from the Cheshire eleven. L e ic e s t e r s h ir e . First Innings.
