The Yorkshire Eleven won their first match of the season against Essex, commenced at Dews bury on Thursday, early in the afternoon of the second day. Lord Hawke was not playing for Yorkshire, but Essex was rather stronger than against Surrey earlier in the week, with Messrs. Johnson, Rowe, and Borradaile in place of Messrs. Womersley, Lang, and Taberer. Heavy rain had made the wicke s soft at the outset, and Uljett, who won the toss, put Essex in. Thanks to the good batting of Mr. Johnson, however, the latter made such a good start that by luncheon the score was 85 for five wickets. Imme diately on the renewalMr. Johnson was bowled and then the end soon came, the last half of the Eleven only adding 15 runs. Of 94 runs from the bat, Messrs. Johnson, Hailey, and Owen contributed 76. Mr. Johnson's 48 was a fine display of free cricket exactly suited to the conditions of the ground. In their turn Yorkshire began badly and the total was only 33 when the third wicket fell. Ulyett’s 39 was a useful score with some little luck, and perhaps the best cricket of the innings was when Wainwright and Fletcher, th« former of whom hit frbely, were together. On a drying wicket Essex, in a minority of 53, were placed at a great disadvantage. Still a good com mencement was made, and thanks to Mr. Owen and Burns 44 was up wilh only two batsmen out. Here Wainwright took the ball from Hirst and his bowling proved so effective that the eight out standing wickets only added 19 runs. Wain- wright’s figures were especially noteworthy. In 89 balls he took 5 wickets at a cost of only 19 runs, With on'y 11 to win Yorkshire sent in a part of its tail, and as the runs were got for the loss of two batsmen, Yorkshire won by eight wickets. It gives exhaustive particulars of Norfolk cricket of every kind in 1891, including the full scores of the county matches, ayerages, &c., in addition to a great quantity of general information. A portrait of Mr. C. J. E. Jarvis, last year’s captain, furnishes an appropriate frontispiece. CRICKETERS— B e s t <-CCB« G o o d s City Agents — b e a r t h is M a r k . — A d v t.
