Cricket 1892

MAY 19, 1892 CRICKET: A WEEKLY BECORD OP THE GAME, 138 M.C.C. & GROUND v. DERBYSHIRE. The Club gained another victory in this match, played at Lord’s on Thursday and Friday last. Both sides were representative, Mr. L. G. Wright and Hall being the only absentees of note from the ranks of the county. The M.C.C. Bide which included no less than eight pro fessionals, was captained by Lord Bawke, who returned from India two days before thematch. Winning the toss, the Club batted first on a good run-getting wicket. Lord Hawke and G. G. Hearne opened the innings, and took the score to 54, when the Yorkshire captain was bowled by Porter for 35. Mr. O’Brien and Barnes made a long stand at the fall of the third wicket. The amateur hit brilliantly, and scored 58 in as many minutes. Barnes played a good innings of 51, and Moorhouse and Martin also batted well. The innings closed for 274. Derby shire made a very bad start, the first four wickets going down for 11 runs. Hulme and Davidson took the score to 77, and played out time. The former was dismissed on resuming on Friday for a valuable contribution of 48, and two more wickets fell with 1 run added, btorer and David- Ron added G3 for the eight wicket, and the innings closed for 172. Storer took out his bat for 46. The visit »rs had perforce to follow-on, but did not do so well as in the first innings. Although seven of the side reached double figures, Bagshaw and Storer were the only batsmen who showed to advantage. The latter again batted in good style and was unlucky enough to be run out. The total reached 142, which left the M.C.C. 41 runs t-> obtain to win. These wero knocked of! with the loss of Mr. O’Brien, so that tbe Club won with nine wickets to spare. M.C.C. & Grounp.
