Cricket 1892
MAY 12, 1892 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 123 M.C.C. AND GROUND v. SUSSEX. Cold cheerless weather marked the opening of the first-class cricket season at Lord’s on Thursday last. The wicket favoured the bowlers, and the match was over early on Friday. Mr. Erann, Mr. C. A. Smith, and Bean were absent from the Sussex eleven, and places were found for three young pro fessionals—Guttridge, Worger, and Parris. The bowling of the last named was one of the features of the match. He had appeared for Sussex twice previously,—in 1890 in the heavy-scoring match at Hove v. Cambridge University, and in 1891 at the Oval v. Sur rey,—but with little success. The M.C.C. team included five amateurs and six pro fessionals. Batting first, the M.C.C. made 127, although at one time it appeared probable that the total would be considerably smaller. Eight wickets were down for 71, when Martin joined Hearne, and the pair added 55 runs by good cricket—the most pro ductive stand of the match. Parris had the capital analysis of six wickets for 24 runs. The Sussex batsmen fared badly against the bowling of Martin and Hearne. Hide made 18 out of the first 21 runs, and Mr. Wilson, who went in second wicket down, carricd out his bat for 13. The rest did little. The M.C.C. second innings realized 57. Mr. Hornby and Mr. Smith alone reached double figures. Parris and Tate bowled unchanged, and the figures of the former, curiously enough, were the same as in the first innings— six for 24. Parris bowls right-hand with on easy action, and varies his pace considerably. On Friday morning Sussex failed to make the 119 runs required to win. Each of the two previous innings had been smaller than its predecessor, and the last was the same. Hearne and Martin bowled unchanged, and the total only reached 48. Mr. Wil son was the only batsman who secured double figures, and he again carried out his bat. The M.C.C. won by 70 runs. Martin altogether took thirteen wickets at a cost of just under four runs apiece—an excellent performance. The last time the M.C.C. won this match was in 1885. M.C C. First Innings. Second Innings.
